Capt. of river boat from PA biographies:
"W.H. Briggs, proprietor of a hotel, P.O. Industry; Soon after the landing of the Pilgrim Fathers on the shores of Massachusetts, three families, named respectively Briggs, Goodwin and Austin, came from England and settled in that state, the Briggs; being blacksmiths by trade. Henry Briggs, a descendant of this pioneer family, and the second son born to his parents, left his native state with his family in 1828, and took up a quarter section of land in South Beaver township, this county, where he following blacksmithing and hotel keeping. Moving to Youngstown Ohio, he remained there a short time and then returned to the farm known then as Black Hawk Post office. He married Mary Westcott, whose ancestors came from Massachusetts, and six children were given them. W.H., the eldest son was born in 1823 near the old Stamping Ground occupied by his early ancestors. The father died at the age of eighty-four years, his widow at the age of eighty-nine. Our subject learned the trade of his forefathers, which he has followed, together with other pursuits, to the present time, and for the past thirty years he has been engaged in steamboat engineering. During the war he carried supplies for northern soldiers, operating in the south. For the past twenty-two years, his present place has been his home, and in his absence the River View Hotel is conducted by Mrs. Briggs. He was married in 1848 to Deboray, daughter of Joseph and sister of Captain Stockdale, of Alleghenny County. Their children are Joseph S., Elizabeth A. (now Mrs. Johnson), Flora B. ( in Des Moines Iowa), and George E. The family are members of the Christian Church. Mr. Briggs is a Republican."
Per History of Beaver County, Pennsylvania and its Centennial Celebration, June 19th to 22nd, 1900, Henry Briggs is shown as the "in-charge" of the Black Hawk Post Office from December 27, 1853 until replaced on May 5, 1867.

In still another biographical reference, "BOOK OF BIOGRAPHIES", Biographical Publishing Company, 1899, page 311:
"James W. Hum's faithful companion in the pathways of life was Margaret Briggs, a daughter of Henry and Mary (Westcoat.) Briggs . Henry Briggs was born in Dighton, Mass., and was a son of Matthew and Cecelia (Reed) Briggs, and (great) grandson of Mattew Briggs, a blacksmith by trade, who came to this country from England. Matthew, Jr., was born in Dighton, Mass., and was also a blacksmith, following that occupation all of his active days. By his first wife he had three children, as follows: Matthew, Elizabeth, and Deliverence. He formed a second union with Cecelia Reed and they had five children: Henry, Nancy, Mary, Joseph, and Cecelia. Henry Briggs, the father of Mrs. Hum, learned the trade of a blacksmith, and, in 1836, removed to South Beaver township, Beaver county. Pa., where be purchased a farm. In addition to general farming, he was engaged at his trade all of his active life, but spent his last days. in retirement, dying at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Hum, in the eighty-fourth year of his age. His wife survived him several years, and died at the remarkable age of eighty-nine years. She had made several trips to her native state, Massachusetts, and had returned from one of these trips but two months prior to her death. Their children were: Henry, who died young; Mary, Julia; William; Elizabeth; Margaret; and Spencer."
There are two different dates ascribed to the migration of Henry and his family to Beaver County (1828 and 1836) and the first of these two references says he moved the family from Blackhawk, South Beaver, to Bridgewater, in 1836. If the family moved to Blackhawk in 1836, they might well have arrived via the Erie Canal and the connecting canal structure south from Buffalo, NY to Beaver Falls. If they came in 1828, the Erie Canal was not yet opened and they would most likely have traveled by wagons from Taunton, MA over a series of turnpikes south to Philadelphia and then west to Pittsburgh. Inasmuch as Henry's youngest child, Spencer Beers Briggs was born in 1829 in Massachusetts, per his Civil War Draft Registration document. the 1828 date is discounted. As well, Henry is recorded as being the "in-charge" of the Black Hawk Post Office from December 27, 1853 until replaced on May 5, 1867. Reports of his having moved to Bridgewater in 1836 are also thus discounted.
