Michael was born in Hamrun in Malta the second child and eldest son of Paul Pisani and Concetta nee Micallef. He was well educated for the time and did quite well at school receiving many first prizes for academic achievment. In his high school final exams which was Malta wide and marked in England he came 35th out of around 1100 students. This enabled him to choose to study for a top profession.
He was particularly interested and very good at maths and science. He was very disciplined and fastidious about his work and so chose to do electrical engineering at the Dockyard School in Malta. Here he was taught in particular by British engineering naval officers. The outbreak of World War II and the bombing of the dockyard area and school by firstly the Italians then the Germans put a holt to his learning until the end of the war.
After the war he studied to become an electical fitter and became apprentice of the year in this field (around 1948). Around this time he met Margherita (Marjorie Stafrace) and started dating. This was only for a reletively short time as he had previously applied to emmigrate to Australia and was accepted because of his skills.
In 1949 he emmigrated to Australia on the "Astorias", but still corresponded regularly with Marjorie. He spent some time in Melbourne and Canberra on his first arrival before settling in Sydney where he worked for STC (Standard Telephone Cables) where he worked in the telephone exchange and in telephone wiring installations etc.
After working in Sydney for 2 years he went back to Malta for a holiday and arrived there in August 1951, renewing his relationship with Marjorie again. She was now 20 years old and he 25 years of age. After a whirlwind romance and engagement they were married at the Sacred Heart Church, Sliema on 17th November 1951 and honeymooned at St. Paul's Bay.
Within a few weeks Michael was on his way back to Australia to find a job and also find a place for he and his new bride to live. Marjorie waited on in Malta in order to obtain assisted passage as a new immigrant to Australia. In December 1951 Marjorie and Michael's sister Lucy left Malta to emmigrate to Australia on the "Toscana". They arrived after 6 weeks in February 1952.
