Jan is the first of ten children, named for his grandfather Jan Johannes van der Tuin.
In the USA he is called: John Van Der Tuin, or: John VanderTuin.
Jan was born in house 25/2 (huizing 25 twee) in Oldelamer.
John died unmarried at the age of 78 years.

Jan emigrated in April 1893 with his parents, brother Johannes and sister Hiltje (Hilda) from Oldelamer in the southern part of the Dutch northern province Friesland to the southeastern part of South Dakota in the USA.
After having lived a while west of the Missouri, they moved to the agrarian township Castalia (postoffice at Nieveen), in the middle between the Missouri and Platte.
In ±1899 they moved to the adjacent, more eastern Douglas County, where he lives his whole life, except for his last years, when he resides in a care home in Platte, Charles Mix County.
Douglas County has 3458 people in 2000, and its seat is Armour.
In June 1900 John with his brother Johannes is servant at Leo De Jong's farm northwest of the agrarian settlement New Holland in Joubert Township, Douglas County.
According to the Census 1905 the 16 years aged John Vandertuin Jr is a farmhand living at New Holland, Douglas County, very probably with his parents on their farm.
In May 1910 John is a farmer on his father's farm 2 1/2 miles southwest of New Holland, Douglas County.
In June 1917 John Van Der Tuin, living at Douglas County, works as farmershand for his uncle Albert Groen.
According to a scan of the Census 1920 John lives in Feb 1920 with his parents and siblings in Clark Township, Precinct no. 6, Douglas County, and is a laborer on their home farm, which lies 2 1/2 mile southwest of the Dutch settlement New Holland,in Clark Township, Douglas County.
John served, like his brother Johannes, in WW I in 1918 in Europe in the Expeditionary Forces.

Jan is a carpenter and, during a short time, farmer. According to the Census 1925 the 36 years aged and single John Vander Tuin is a clerk, residing at Harrison, Douglas County. He has no own home. In April 1930 John has a profession in building, living with his mother and three siblings 2 1/2 mile southwest of New Holland, Douglas County.

In April 1940 he still lives with his mother, head of the family, and his brother Johannes on the rented farm in Clark Township, 2 1/2 mile southwest of New Holland. John works 26 weeks a year as a carpenter and earns $390 by it, which isn't bad atall.
Right next to them brother Adrian lives with his family on a rented farm too.

After 1940 John and his brother Hannes, both bachelors, lived together on a farm 3/4 mile south of New Holland in section 2 of Clark Township, in the same quarter of 160 acres as their brother Adrian and his family. They visited the Adrian's four times a day for morning coffee at 9.30 AM, dinner at 12.00, afternoon coffee at 3.30 PM and supper when ever it was called ready to them.
