Eén van de eerste leerlingen van de Kweekschool voor de Scheepvaart gestiocht in 1785 in Amsterdam. His skills in navigation is clear in the book by J.C.M. Warnsinck from 1935, published by the occassion of the 150-year anniversary of the school. On October 11, 1797, during the sea-battle at Kamperduin, he was on board of the Admiralty-ship "De Vrijheid" . In 1802 he was (1e lieutenant at Sea) commander of the schooner "De Vliegende Visch" destined to make a trip to St. Domingo, under orders of Vice-Admiral P. Hartsink. During this occassion he lost both masts while going to sea by storm. He knew to save his ship, by going into the harbor of Vlissingen. In 1804 he was promoted to Captain Lieutenant at Sea; in 1806 he was Adjutant of the Vice-Admiral DE WINKEL. In 1807 he was knighted in the Ordre of the Union. In March 1809, he was reliefed of duty of command of the fregat Venus, due to illness. On July 1 1814 he retired Lieutenant-Colonel at Sea.
