John Frederick Holweg; son of Jacob Holweg and Aleida Schildering Holweg. A brother, John Bernard Holweg, was born May 5, 1855. In the spring of 1856 the family joined eleven other families and journeyed to Bollinger County, Missouri to make a new start in the wooded lands of Vinemount in southeast Missouri. A third child, a daughter named Gesina Elizabeth, was born in 1858. The Jacob Holweg family was one of the original homestead families of St. John's Catholic Church.
John Frederick Holweg was educated for a few years in Cincinnati and, at the time of the 1870 census, was employed in the office of the Bollinger County, Missouri Clerk. John was noted as having the best handwriting in the records. In July of 1876, Aleida, John's mother, sold 160 acres of land to him, which amounted to half of the acreage that was originally purchased by she and Jacob.
On April 10, 1877 John Frederick married Ann Mary Schulte, the daughter of Joseph Henry and Mary Aleida Bramhoff Schulte. Ann Mary was born June 24, 1855. John and Mary had two children. Their son, Henry Jacob Joseph was born on December 13, 1877 and daughter, Mary Aleida was born on January 19, 1880.
In 1878, among old papers of the St. John's parish was located a petition drawn up and signed by most of the parish elders to secure services of a new pastor, and assure payment of his salary. The first who signed the petition was John F. Holweg. He may well have written the solicitation, and started its circulation.
In 1879 a notation in the records of St. John's Church indicated that John F. Holweg was paid $20.00 for teaching at the school during the month of January. It is not known if he taught any longer than this month. John was operating a farm and had a young son at home; the teaching position may well have been a service to his Church community because there was no one else to fill the position.
At the time of the 1870 Census he was employed in the office of the county clerk of Bollinger County, MO. He purchased 160 acres of land from his mother, Aleida Holweg. A notation in the records of St. John's Catholic Church in Vinemount (now Leopold), MO indicated that John F. Holweg was paid $20.00 for teaching at the schoold during the month of January, 1879. By the time of the 1880 census, John lived with his wife and two children on the original homestead of his parents.
