[doddimp.FTW] [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 14, Ed. 1, Tree #0434, Date of Import: Apr 15, 2001] John Luttrell and Frances Sanford John Luttrell was born about 1712, probably in Westmoreland Co, Virginia. His parents were Simon and Elizabeth Luttrell. (The spelling of the name varied on different documents but was usually "Littrell"; the spelling "Luttrell" was not commonly used until later when some of the children of John and Elizabeth moved to Tennessee.) Frances Sanford was born about 1715, probably in Westmoreland County, to Thomas Sanford and Margaret Luttrell Sanford. John and Frances were married about 1734 in Westmoreland County. John had been married before in about 1732 to Catherine Thomas who apparently died in about 1734, probably while giving birth to the second of their two sons, James. The first, John, was probably born a year earlier. John and Frances had four known children, all sons, and all born in Westmoreland County: Richard, born in 1735; Thomas, born about 1750; Hugh, born about 1755; and William, born about 1760. The spacing of these known children makes it likely that there were also daughters, presently unknown. Of the two sons from John's first marriage, James died at an early age. The other son, John, had gone to North Carolina by 1770 where he became Clerk of the Crown for Orange County. He acquired a fortune as a member of the Henderson Company which came to own great amounts of land in Tennessee. In 1776 Daniel Boone with Judge Richard Henderson and associates made a treaty with the Indians on behalf of themselves in which in which they gained title to the vast "Transylvania" tract of land. (A deed recorded in Knox County in 1800 shows the transfer of 190,000 acres of land from the estate of John Luttrell to a John Williams et al.) John Luttrell was a Lieutenant Colonel in the army during the Revolutionary War; he was killed by Torries in 1781. Of the sons from John's second marriage, Richard moved to Amherst County about 1764 and served under General George Rogers Clark in the Illinois Campaign which conquered the Northwest Territory in the Revolutionary War; Thomas moved to Kentucky where he was killed by Indians sometime before 1781; Hugh died sometime before 1799 at a location presently unknown; and William remained in Westmoreland County where he died in 1821. John Luttrell died sometime before 1795, probably in Westmoreland County. Frances Sanford Luttrell probably also died in Westmoreland County; the date of her death is unknown.
