The Origins Of the surname Tanis: Here's what I could find:
From Leo Akershoek's website on the Tanis family of Goeree-Overflakkee, Netherlands:
The family name was first referenced in the 13th century when they held estates in that shire. The name originated Saint Aubin du Thenney in Eure. (opm. mijnerzijds: De franse uitsprak van "Tanis" is phonetisch geschreven als "Tannies") Richard de Tani still held his estates in Thenney which was in the honour of Gilbert FitzRichard.
Many alternative spellings of the name were found. They were typically linked to a common root, usually one of the Norman nobles of the Battle of Hastings. The name Tanis, occurred in many references other spellings are: Taney, Tanney, Tawney, Tannie, de Tani, and many more. Scribes recorded and spelled the name as it sounded. Often a person would be born with one spelling, married with another, and buried with a headstone that showed another. All three spellings related to the same person. Sometimes preferences for different spelling variations either came from a division of the family or religious reasons, or sometimes, patriotic reasons.
The family name Tanis is believed to be descended originally from the Norman race. They were commonly believed to be of French origin but were, more accurately Vikings. The Vikings landed in the Orkneys and Northern Scotland about the year 870 AD., under their Chief, Stirgud the Stout. Later under their Earl, Thorfinn Rollo, they invaded France about 910 AD. The French king, Charles the Simple, after Rollo laid siege to Paris, finally conceded defeat and granted Northern France to Rollo.
Rollo became the first duke of Normandy, the territory of the North Men. Duke William, who invaded and defeated England in 1066, was descended from the first Duke Rollo of Normandy.
Duke William took census of most of England in 1085-86 and recorded the Domesday Book. A family name, capable of being traced back to this document or to Hastings, was a sign of honour for families during the middle ages, and even to this day.
From Jack Tanis on January 2, 2002 - He writes to share; Most family stories link back to French Huguenot (Protestant) roots and the village of Tanis near Mont St. Michel.
About 25 years ago, my cousin visited with a person named Tanis in Ouddorp who claimed that the family emigrated from France to Spain to England and then to Ouddorp, NL to find religious freedom.
Here is more on the Tanis name as used historically:
Tanis (in Egyptian Zani, in Hebrew Zoan), was one of the oldest cities in Egypt, (Numbers 13:22, Now Hebron was built 7 years before Zoan in Egypt) and dates to the 18th century B.C. and was in existence as early as Pharaoh Pepi I Merira of the sixth dynasty according to hieroglyphic inscriptions. It flourished under the Pharoah of the twelfth dynasty, under the Hyksos or Shephard kings (fifteenth to seventeenth dynasties), and under the Pharaohs of the (1075 B.C.) nineteenth, twenty-first and twenty-third dynasties who made Tanis their capital. It was under the Shepard kings that the Israelites found themselves in Egypt in the land of Gessen, near Tanis and it was in that city which was the residence of Rameses II that Moses and Aaron performed many wonders. So it is a mistake to confound Tanis with the Rameses built by the Israelites and probably situated at Tell Rotab.
Tanis Law: Tanistrie, Tanist
The Celts in Ireland had a custom that a person only holds rights to their land during their lifetime, when they die all the lords and captains assembled in a ceremony and elected a new head of the family, the most able to rule, perhaps a brother of the deceased, but it was always a person who would be able to protect the land and guard it, thus it did not generally go to the man's young children. This custom (Tanistrie) and the newly elected person was called a Tanist and was practiced until the 1600's when Edward I removed the stone to England and English law was finally imposed.
Tanis Stone, Jacob's Stone, Stone of Destiny, Bethel Stone, Coronation Stone, Jacobs Pillow, Lia-Fail, The Rock:
In the above noted ceremony the newly elected Tanist was taken to the location of the stone (Icolmkil) which was believed to be the stone mentioned in the Bible (Genesis 28:10-22) that Jacob used as a pillow for his head and later Joshua again used to reconfirm the pledge (Joshua 24:25-28) "And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that was by the sanctuary of the Lord." This was first referenced in Edmund Spenser's book "A Veue of the present state of Ireland, 1596, prepared from text found in Grosart, 1894. This same stone was taken and brought to this area to continue the prophecies of God to the people. The Tanist placed one foot on the stone and received a wand from an appointed official, he then stepped down and turned thrice around and then thrice back again, and was proclaimed the new ruler.
The Lia-Fail of Ireland was erected in Icolmkil for the coronation of Fergus Eric. The stone was removed to Scone and became the coronation chair of Scotland, Edward I of England confiscated the stone and placed it in Westminster Abbey and it remained here for all the sovereigns coronations. (Celtic, Tanist, the heir apparent). In 1996 England returned the stone to Scotland and it is now in a museum.
In Ode English "So Stan" = As stone. Stanis'las = (M.) Lithuanian Ode English and means "Stone Clearing".
