Bio: Elizabeth "Betty" Batley, born February 7, 1921, to Matthew Edward and Opal Adele (Lampe) Hogan, died at a local health care facility on March 19, 2012.Betty married Harold Leon Batley on December 27, 1940, and together they had one daughter, Penney Elizabeth Kerns (Lonnie). Her family also consists of two granddaughters, Kimberly Kay Pettis (Gary) of St. Joseph and Kristina Kay Alldredge (Charles) of Mont Alto, Pa.; great-grandchildren: Jonathan, Erin (Kevin Barnett) and April Pettis of St. Joseph; Amanda (Ronnie Chilcoate) of Mont Alto; Brittni Alldredge (financè, Cory Fagen) of Waynesboro, Pa.; Casey Alldredge (Lake Albright) of Waynesborro, Pa.; Drew and Ethan Alldredge of Mont Alto; and six great-great-grandchildren: Zack, Angel and Jason Barnett of St. Joseph; and Alexis, Kendra and Kory Chilcoate of Mont Alto.Betty was an avid seamstress, having worked at Ely Walker, Nelly Don and Big Smith.She loved doing about any type of crafts. She loved to play cards and belonged to several card clubs. She also enjoyed bowling and was in several bowling leagues. Betty had been a Girl Scout leader, room mother and Y-teen leader. She worked as an instructor, giving ballroom dance lessons as a young woman at the original Frog Hop Ballroom and at the Lotus Club, located at Lake Contrary.Betty also worked as night manager for Baskin-Robbins after her retirement.A member of the Eagles Auxiliary No. 49 since March 1985, she served as Inside and Outside Guard, Conductor, Chaplain, Madam President and Past Madam President. She also worked the bingo kitchen for over three years, baking and donating up to six pies a week. She donated numerous pies for sale in the charity kitchen. Many an auction enjoyed the bidding for one of her cream pies, square angel food cakes, or the most prized of all: raspberry pie. Betty was awarded a certificate of service from District 1 and received the Alta Browing Smith Woman of the Year Award in 2009. Betty had been an active member of the VFW, serving a treasurer and delivering books and "goodies" to the VA hospital.She also found time to work over 2,000 hours as a volunteer at the local state hospital.Betty was predeceased by her husband "Leon;" her parents; half-brothers, Marion "Bud" and George Hogan; half-sister, Lena Marie Thornbury; and step-brother, James Welsh.Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Penney and Lonnie Kerns; granddaughters, Kimberly and Gary Pettis and Kristina and Charles Alldredge; eight great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; half-brothers, Robert, John and Charles Hogan; numerous nieces and nephews; and special adopted grandsons, Terry Pettis and Jerry Smock.The family extends their deepest appreciation to Saxton Health Care Inn and Hands of Hope Hospice for their excellent care and comfort.Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Interment: Memorial Park Cemetery.
