Amasa F. Jeffers, 74, retired farmer, of 70, East Barney, street, died in an Ogdensburg hospital Monday afternoon at 2:30. The funeral will be at the Sprague funeral home Wednesday afternoon at 2 with Rev. Charles Shumway retired Methodist minister, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home this evening. Mr. Jeffers is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Donald (Irma) Fredenburg, 70 Barney street; a brother Lynn of New Haven; two sisters, Mrs. Vivian Matty Gouverneur, and Mrs. Harry 0. (Myrtle) Gonyou, Philadelphia; and one grandson. Mr. Jeffers was born in the town of Gouverneur on June 20 1883, the son of Walter and Lavinia CORBIN Jeffers. He attended local school. On Feb 14, 1906, he married Miss Etta Patterson; Richville. Rev. F. L. Boynton, minister of the Richville Baptist Church, officiated. After marriage, the couple lived for three years on the CORBIN homestead on the Richville road Mr. Jeffers then worked for four years in the mines of the St. Joseph Lead company at Edwards. The couple moved to Rodman where they farmed for three years, then to Russell where they farmed for 13 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Jeffers moved to the Sandy Cheek area. Mrs. Jeffers died on May 14,
1948. Mr. Jeffers had since been making his home with his daughter at 70 East Barney street. He had been in poor health for years. Mr. Jeffers was a member of the first Methodist Church, Gouvernor, St. Paul Brotherhood. Walter Jeffers, 84, who sold fruits and vegetables in this village for many years, died at his home on the Richville road, just outside this village, Friday night at about 11 'o'clock. He had been in poor health for the past five years, as the result of serious injuries he suffered in 1930 when he was struck by an automobile as he was crossing the road near his home. He was able to be up and around the house on his birthday, Dec 31. Mr. Jeffers was born in Theresa Dec 31,.1851, the son of Frederick and Lavina Pierce Jeffers. He was twice married. His first wife was Vinnie CORBIN of Gouverneur, whom he married, in 1875. Shortly after his marriage he built a cheese factory at Eddy, which was then called Jerusalem Corners. The factory located on the DeKalb Junction-Canton road was closed many years ago. Mr. Jeffers operated the factory for one year. After leaving the cheese factory Mr. Jeffers moved to the old CORBIN homestead farm on the Gouverneur-Richville road and lived there for many years with his wife and family. His first wife died in 1922. He later married Sarah Patterson of Rensselaer Falls, who survives him. Apples and potatoes were the two principal products Mr. Jeffers sold in this village, although he also dealt in other vegetables. Before he was injured in, the automobile accident in 1930, he was actively engaged in his work. He drove a horse and wagon, selling his products from house to house, and was well known in Gouverneur. He moved from the CORBIN homestead to the present location just outside this village on the Richville road some years ago. Surviving besides the widow, are three sons: Amasa Jeffers and Claude Jeffers, Richville road, and Lynn W. Jeffers, Mexico; three daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Gonyou and Mrs. Vivian Matty, Gouverneur, and Mrs. Ethel Jones, Natural Dam; one brother, Byron Jeffers, Hammond; and two sisters; Mrs. Ada Holt, Gouverneur, and Mrs. Martha Wright, Hollywood, Calif. He also leaves 21 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday at 2:00 P.M. Rev. H. A. Thomas, pastor of Methodist Church of Gouverneur, officiated. Burial was made in the Riverside cemetery.
