Rev. Harvey M. Lawson, Ph.B., B.D., "History and Genealogy of the Descendants of Clement Corbin of Muddy River (Brookline) Mass. and Woodstock, Conn.", 1905, p. 283 #459 "David POTTER CORBIN (Benjamin, David, Asahel, Benjamin, Jabez, Clement), b. July 11, 1833; m. Mary Sheldon of Suffield, Conn., April 26, 1861. She now (1905) resides at 57 Willard St., Hartford, Conn., David P. CORBIN, A.M., obtained his early education in schools of Union,Connecticut, his native town, where he attended both the common schools and the "select schools" (i.e., of the grade of high school), which he was instrumental in starting. He taught several terms in the vicinity to earn money for further education, which he pursued at Groten Academy, Mass., Madison University at Hamilton, New York (now Colgate), and the Connecticut Literary Institution at Suffield, Connecticut He graduated from Brown University in 1860. He then became a teacher at Suffield until the second year of the war, when the call came for 300,000 men to serve nine months. He was an intense patriot, enlisted himself Aug 25, 1862, and raised many recruits in Suffield and Union. These were mustered into Co. G of the 22nd Regt., of which company Mr. CORBIN was appointed 1st lieutenant. This company served for nine months around Washington and Norfolk. On March 2, 1863, Mr. CORBIN was promoted captain. The Grand Army Post at Union is named after him, the D. P. CORBIN Post, No. 74. After completing his service in the army he resumed teaching, first at Willimantic, where he started a private high school, then at East Hartford, and again at Willimantic from 1865 to 1869, as principal of the Natnchaug school. Here as elsewhere he displayed his splendid abilities as a teacher, thoroughly organizing the school. Here as elsewhere his displayed his splendid abilities as a teacher, thoroughly organizing the school, and imparting to the pupils something of his own energy and enthusiasm. But his energy was too much for his health, which was never robust, and he was compelled to rest from teaching for a time. Then he took the position of principal of the West Middle Public School at Hartford, which he held until his death. Here he overcame all opposition, and his excellent qualifications as a man and a teacher won many friends. After several years of successful work he began to be much troubled with pulmonary difficulties and in 1879, with his brother William, went to Colorado to regain his health. But the disease had progressed too far and he died at Larned, Kansas, March 15, 1880. He was buried near his birthplace at Union, Tolland County, Connecticut, for which town he always cherished a deep affection."
