On July 29, 1893, Mr. and Mrs. Lawson sailed as missionaries of the American Board to India, arriving in Bombay Sep 10. They were stationed at Ahmednagar, a city in the Deccan on hundred and fifty miles east of Bombay. Here Mr. Lawson soon engaged in teaching in English in the Mission High School, and later in the Theological Seminary, at the same time learning the Marathi language. Mrs. Lawson also studied the language, and taught sewing and fancy work, music, and elocution. Mr. Lawson did much work among the educated Hindus, giving frequent lectures; he carried on the Y.M.C.A. work, was station treasurer, superintended a book depot, and was chaplain for the Non-Conformist British soldiers. Later he had charge of a district, and made frequent tours. In 1897 Mrs. Lawson's health made frequent tours. In 1897 Mrs. Lawson's health became so poor that they reluctantly left their work, returning to America via Burma, Singapore, China, Japan, and San Francisco. For a year after their return they made their headquarters in New Haven, where Mr. Lawson, in addition to taking post-graduate studies at Yale, made many missionary addresses in the churches and gave stereoptican lectures with fine effect. In Sep, 1898, he became pastor of the Congregational Church at Brooklyn, Connecticut, where he remained until 1901, a part of the time being also chaplain of the Windham County jail. In the fall of 1901, for the sake of Mrs. Lawson's health, he went to Pomona, Fla., and took charge of the church there until the summer of 1902. In the winter of 1902-3 he was principal of the Boydton Institute for colored people at Boydton, Va. He acted as pastor of the Congregational Church at Hanover, Connecticut, from Jan 1904, to March 1, 1905. He resides at present at Putnam, Connecticut."
