MEACHUM Family History
"In 1834, Amos and Nancy started moving their family westward, first to Clark County, Ohio and then to Champaign County, Ohio. It was in Champaign County where, shortly after the birth of his youngest child, Amos lost his life on August 17, 1838. Despite the loss of their patron, Amos Broughton's family continued their trek, finally settling in Swan Township, Noble County, Indiana in the fall of 1838. According to the book, Goodspeed's History of Noble County, the family had little money and no food, but all went to work - receiving provisions of any kind as pay - and managed to weather the winter.
It would be nearly thirty years before Amos' widow, Nancy, would remarry which she did to Joseph Cummings on December 6, 1864. Her second marriage would prove to be brief when just three years later Cummings died. Widowed for a second time, Nancy would live into her 80's, passing away peacefully in her sleep in 1876. She's buried beside her daughter, Annue, at Swan Cemetery."
