From the Obituary in the Austin Daily Herald; Austin, Minnesota. August 7, 1896; Page One:
"Her grandmother's grandfather was Sir Francis Rumbout, an English knight, who two centuries ago got a grant of land twelve miles by nine, lying on both sides of the Fishkill River. He settled there, and from hium the Kips, the Schencks and the Van Cofrtlandts bought."
At the age of 25 she married "Thomas Hicks, a well to do merchant, who was double her age."
"Then he died , and some of her relatives in Holland followed his example. Their bequests, added to her Western real estate [in Ohio, LB], gave Mrs. Hicks an annual income of $50,000."
"The entertainment which she gave at her house in West Fourteenth Streetn wqere attended by some of the most famous and wealthy persons of this city."
Then left NY, went to Rome and London "where General Robert Schenck was our Minister at the Court of Saint James. He presented his brilliant relative to Quen Victoria, and that of course, setled her status in London society."
She returned ultimately to NY where she met "Thomas Lord, a man more than eighty years old, who had managed to accumulate in the dry good business the coimfortable little sum of $6,000,000." He "proposed himself, was refused, and Mrs.Hicks ran away to Europe, where she was able to befriend the Austrian Empress [...]" "Mrs Hicks returned to America, to become the wife o the millionnaire octogenarian in DEcember 1877."
"A few years ago her fortune w3as estimated to have been $3,000,000."
