1843 Jan Copier told by son Jan Copier to Jans Anjewierden As told by Jan Copier to his daughter Jans Anjewierden, December 1962, about his father Jan Copier, born January 22, 1843, son of Jan Copier and Maria van der Wilt. My father, Jan Copier, son of Jan Copier and Maria van der Wilt was the youngest child of six. When he was 3 years old his father died. His older brothers and sisters and his mother worked to keep the family together. The oldest daughter was 15 years old and the oldest son 12 years old at this time. When my father started school, he would sometimes find a note on the table when he came home: "Het eten staat in bed, Want ik ben bij Jet" This meant that his mother had placed his food in his bed to keep it warm, in as much as she was unable to be home to give it to him. When the last of his brothers and sisters married, my father was 16 years old and the sole provider for the family. He was a husky young fellow and could work like a man. His mother was now much older and so the officials of the Dutch Reformed Church came to see him. (It seems that his mother's side of the family was quite well to do and had some say in church affairs.) They asked my father if he needed help in caring for his mother, but my father said that he would look after her and take good care of her, which he did until her death in 1881. By this time my father was 39 years old. In January of 1882 he married Geertje Leeman, who gave him a son (me) on October 9, 1885. I was a small baby and very hard to keep alive. When I was two and a half years old my mother died (June 20, 1888). After about a half year, in January 1889 my father married Jannetje Leeman, the older sister of his deceased wife. I can still remember, that one of my relatives told me not to say Aunt any more to her, but Mother, because she had now become my mother. She was very good to my father and me. In his later years my father started to have seizures from time to time. When the First World War broke out, it was forbidden to come close to the fort which was located not far from our home. This fort was surrounded by water and we always went through these waters to go to our land. (They were peat farmers.) The soldiers finally told my father that if he did not stop coming through there, they would drive lead through him. This was very upsetting to him, together with all limits set, because the country was mobilized and ready to fight if needed. He now had his seizures more often and on the third day of December 1914 while working his schouw (a type of freight boat) through the canal, he had another seizure, which made him fall overboard, his "vaarboom" (punting pole) was broken in two and when help came, they could only bring up his body, because my father had drowned. My mother stayed with me, until her death on December 7, 1921. She lived in one of the rooms of our house. Later we also had her sister, Neeltje Leeman with us. Neeltje had never been married. She died February 9, 1921.
