Bio: BIRTH AND PARENTS AND SIBLINGS
Abraham Bergey was born on January 6, 1743 in Pennsylvania to a prominent Mennonite, John Ulrich Bergey (1700-1762) and to his wife Anna Mary Clemens (1709-1789). His father was an immigrant from Switzerland. The township of his birth was Lower Salford in Montgomery County. Bergey was originally spelled by John as Bürgy. His children and their children used a variety of spellings of the surname. Abraham had twelve siblings. One source of seven in the Netherlands Family Trees, gave Abraham a middle name -- his mother's maiden name -- and no other source did so. Christian and Isaac, brothers, were Revolutionary Patriots who served as Privates in the Philadelphia Militia (DAR ancestors A009521 and A009522). Abraham, himself, provided service by paying supply tax in 1780 (DAR ancestor A212660).
MARRIAGES AND FAMILIES
Abraham had three children with his first wife. Then, Salome (Gorgas) Bergey died unexpectedly. She was, according to a Mennonite Vital Record, buried in Keelys Cemetery. Abraham had seven children with his second wife, Esther (Shantz) Bergey, whose father was an immigrant from Switzerland. Their children included a daughter, Hannah. Hannah married in 1805, and continued to live in Montgomery County while her father was alive.
DEATH AND BURIAL
He died on September 12, 1817, in the township of Limerick in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. A photographer reported in 2020 that there was no evidence of his gravesite in Keelys Cemetery. (According to the Salford cemetery historian in 2020, he was not buried in the same cemetery, Salford, as his father and brother, Christian.) Esther Bergey's burial site was unknown as of 2020. An abstract of Esther's Probate was reported.
PROBATE
Abraham left no Will. A document, found in 2021, verified that on November 16, 1818 a Petition for Letters of Administration of his Estate was approved.
