Biography

This profile is part of theButler Name Study.
John, son ofJohn Butlerand his wifeJane Elliott,[1]was baptized at Roxwell, Essex on 7 December 1600.[2][3]He was his father's main heir.[1]
John had a bequest under the 1634 will of his cousin Sir John Butler.[2][3][4]
In 1635 John and his sisterElizabeth(who marriedWilliam Claiborne) emigrated to Kent Island, Maryland. John became Captain of the pinnacleElizabeth. He was involved in action against ships belonging toCecil Calvert, who had been awarded the proprietorship of Maryland, which had led to a dispute over the rights to Kent Island. Four men died in the skirmish, which was known as the Battle of Pocomoke Sound. Two years later John was charged with sedition, piracy and murder for his involvement in the battle.[5][6]The residents of Kent Island prevented the serving of a warrant for his arrest.[7]John's colleague Captain Thomas Smith was hanged, but John himself managed to reach an understanding with the Maryland authorities and remained in Kent Island.[5]Leonard Calvert(Cecil Calvert's brother and Governor of Maryland) tried to win John over by "showing favour to him" as he "might be the fitted man to command Kent Island". John refused the role.[7]
In 1640 Captain John Butler petitioned to confirm title to land granted by Captain William Clayborne.[5][8]The following year John was given some magistrate responsibilities by the Calverts.[5]
Death and Will
Captain John Butler died, unmarried, on Kent Island, Maryland,[4]before 1 April 1642, when his will was proved.[2][3]The will itself does not survive. He appointed his brotherThomasexecutor, though (probably because Thomas was in England) John Abbot was in the event appointed to that role; and he left his Kent Island plantation to Thomas.[5]
Research Notes
Hisfatheris often marked as the Gateway Ancestor, since he had children but his son (this John Butler) died unmarried.[2]
