Bio: Mary Debnam ( 1634- 1687 ) was the second wife of Lawrence Smith ( 1629-1700 ). Lawrence Smith's first wife was Mary Hitchon ( 1631-1652 ). Mary Hitchon died in childbirth and is buried in England. She gave birth to a daughter , Mary Hitchon Smith ( 1652- 1720 ), who was brought to America as an infant. Lawrence Smith ( 1629- 1700 ) married Mary Debnam ( 1634- 1687 ) in 1653 at Abingdon Episcopal Church in Gloucester County, Virginia. Mary Hitchon Smith ( 1652- 1720 ), the daughter by Lawrence Smith's first marriage later married (1709 ) her widowed brother-in law, John Taliaferro ( 1656-1720 ) after the death of her half-sister , Sarah Smith ( 1659- 1708 ).

The parents of Mary Debnam ( 1634- 1687 )were: William Henry Debnam ( 1608- 1657 ) and Katherine Frances Jennings ( 1610- 1683 ). They arrived in America from England in 1636.Mary Hitchon, Lawrence Smith (1629-1700 )'s first wife, was born on 28 Aug 1631 in Burnley, Lancashire, England and died in childbirth in 1652 in England. She was the daughter of William Hitchon ( 1592-1638 ) and Martha (Smyth) Hitchon (1596-1678).

Mary Hitchon ( 1631-1652 ) married Lawrence Smith (1629-1700) on Sept. 28, 1651 in Burnley Parish in Lancashire, England (according to the Burnley - Parish Register, 1562-1653). Lawrence was the son of Christopher Smith (1592-1638) and Elizabeth (Towneley) Smith (1598-1679).

Maj. Lawrence Smith (1629-1700 ) and Mary Debnam Smith (1634-1687 ) were the parents of the following known children: Charles, Augustine, Lawrence, Sarah, William, Elizabeth, Guy and John.

Lawrence Smith (1629-1700 ) arrived from England in 1652. "Imported" by Capt. Augustine Warner who was married to Mary Towneley, sister of Elizabeth Towneley, Lawrence's mother. They were daughters of Lawrence Towneley ( 1575-1655 ), the grandfather of Lawrence Smith and Jennet Halstead (1580-? ) his grandmother. Lawrence Towneley (1575-1655 )is also a direct ancestor of both George Washington and Robert E.Lee through Mary Towneley (1614-1679 ), wife of Augustine Washington.
Lost to time in the old second church burial area outside the walls of the current third church.
