Biography
John Cumber was aMaryland colonist.
Origin
No record of the birth of John Cumber has been found directly linking to the man who died in Maryland in 1677. He was likely born in England around 1620 based on the fact that he was a grandfather when he died. John Cumber settled in Anne Arundel where he was mentioned in a warrant granted toThomas Pratt9 APR 1663.
Marriage & Family
From his will we now that John was married to a woman named Judith at the time of his decease. He was the father of at least two children, a son, who was likely deceased, but was the father of John Cumber Jr. and a daughter, not named, who was the wife of Thomas Pratt.
Death
20 NOV 1676 I John Cumber of Anne Arundel County in the province of Maryland being sick in body . . .
â¢to Thomas Pratt 2,000 pounds of tobacco to be paid within one whole year after my decease.
â¢to my loving grandchild John Cumber the sum of £40 sterling or the value thereof in tobacco when he shall come to age 21 and also all that land called Cumberstone containing 200 acres bounding on the land formerly laid out for myself when he comes to age 21, but in case he shall die before he come to age then the land and the £40 shall fall to my beloved wife Judith Cumber and her heirs forever.
â¢I also give to my wife, Judith Cumber all my whole estate both real & personal and appoint her my executrix.
