Mary Potts
Birth: 1682 Merthyr Tydfil, Wales
Death: 1705 (aged 22œ23) Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA
Burial: Unknown

Memorial #: 135926437
Bio: Mary Unknown, 1st wife of Jonas Potts immigrant from Llangurig, Wales:

There is no verification or sourced documentation of her maiden name, birth date or location, that she came to the colonies with Jonas Potts, or the date and location of her death. There is, however, strong circumstantial evidence that provides more accurate information:

Mary Unknown married Jonas Potts as his 1st wife no later than Jul 1699 as their eldest son David Potts was born in May 1700 near Germantown; it appears all their children were born there, based on land records and Friends Meeting minutes.
[Pottstown should be eliminated as it was not in existence until the 1760s, long after the births of the children of Jonas Potts]

The date of death of Mary (Unk) Potts, 1st wife of Jonas Potts, was about 1721 and the location would be Gilberts Manor/Perkiomen - Providence/Olethgo, then Philadelphia now Montgomery Co, PA.

Extant records:

The first recorded purchase of land made by Jonas Potts was 12 Jun 1693 for 133? acres of land at Cheltenham from Jacob Telner [PA Min Bk A, pg 133). He appears on the First Tax List for Philadelphia County on 26 Sep 1693, taxed with Thomas Whitton at Cheltenham. In 1701, Jonas conveyed this land to James Williams of Darby [Norristown Deed Bk 80, pg 574]

It should be noted that Cheltenham bordered Germantown.

1703-1707: Abington Mtg (also called Dublin Mtg) served many who lived in the Germantown area.
Based on the records of Abington Friends Meeting, Mary & Jonas Potts had —diverse small children“ and were in need of assistance from Apr 1703 through August 1703 and then again on 31 Mar 1707.

• On 8 Apr 1703 at Radnor Mtg, Jonas Potts requests assistance to buy a cow, he belonging to another meeting (Abington), he is ordered to bring a Certificate to the next meeting.

• On 13 May 1703 at Radnor Mtg, Friends propose to provide assistance for Jonas Potts to buy a cow, and again requested a certificate from the meeting he belonged; his wife Mary complied and was granted same dated 31 May 1703 which she produced to Radnor Mtg on 8 Jul 1703; Jonas did not. The meeting was prepared to lend the money collected, but on 12 Aug 1703 crossed out the entry and re-wrote that the Women‘s Mtg was to give the funds collected directly to his wife. The discussion went on for 5 months œ April to August, 1703.

Many have —assumed“ that this 1703 Certificate from Abington Mtg was —to remove to the place where her parents resided in North Wales“, but apparently failed to read all entries.

Many have —assumed“ that the minute was crossed out due to the death of Mary but apparently failed to read all 5 pages of entries.

• On 31 May 1707 at Abington Mtg, Jonas again requests assistance; his wife haven been a long while sick. Dennis Cunnard & Arnold Klicken were appointed to assist him with money out of their subscription.

• On 5mo/Jul 31, 1710 Abington Mtg granted a Certificate for Jonas Potts to Perkiomen; this would coincide with the removal of the family to Gilbert‘s Manor. [Jonas Potts received a grant to lease 200 acres dated 30th 3 mo/May 1707, Minute Book "I", pg 170]

• On 7 Sep 1710 at Germantown, Jonas & Mary Potts sign as witnesses to the marriage of Henry Kunders/Cunrad & Catherine Streyper; as did his sister Margaret (Potts) & Jacob Shoemaker and his nephew Thomas & Martha (Keurlis) Potts, with many of the early settlers of Germantown.

• On 27 Jul 1716 Mary (Unk) Potts requested for herself and her daughters and on 31 Aug 1716 received, a Certificate to Philadelphia Mtg.

This request specifically states —daughters“ [which causes some doubt as to the identity of the mother of purported son Jonathan Potts] son David was of age. If Jonathan was born in 1714, then he would have been included in this certificate as Jonas had not yet married his 2nd wife œ see below].

Evidence to support Mary (Unk) Potts, 1st wife of Jonas Potts, was still living in 1719:

• On 24 Sep 1718, Deborah, daughter of Jonas & Mary Potts, died as recorded at Philadelphia Mtg. It does not mention that her mother Mary Potts was deceased.

• On 15 Oct 1719 daughter Rachel Potts married Joseph Burson and daughter Elizabeth Potts married William Heald in a double ceremony at the house of Jonas Potts —at Perkiomen“. Jonas & Mary Potts sign directly under the bride and groom on both Certificates.
Joseph‘s unmarried sister Mary Burson also signs as a witness to his marriage; therefore Mary Potts and Mary Burson were clearly two different individuals]

• On 4 Oct 1722 at Germantown, Jonas & Mary Potts sign as witnesses to the marriage of his niece Elizabeth Potts to Peter Cleaver Jr. This could be either 1st Mary or 2nd Mary œ no distinction can be made.

The 2nd wife of Jonas Potts was Mary Burson, daughter of Edward & Hannah (Goud) Burson:

• 1715 Will of George Burson names his unmarried daughter Mary Burson (proved Feb 1716, Will Bk D, pg 61);

• 1719 marriage certificate of her brother Joseph Burson shows her as unmarried;

• 1721 marriage certificate of her sister Ann Burson to Cunrad Cunrad shows her as unmarried.

On 29 Nov 1727, an Indenture is made for 69 acres in Providence Twp to Harman IndeHaven out of an 800 acre tract of land of Edward Burson, deceased. The tract is described as —on the east side of Schuylkill River near the mouth of Mingo Creek above the rivers confluence with Perkiomen Creek“
This crucial Indenture states, in part:

• "THIS INDENTURE made the Twentininth day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand Seven Hundred Twenty and Seven Between Hannah Burson of Limerick township in the county of Philadelphia in the province of pensilvania widow and Relict of George Burson Late of the sd. county yeoman deceased; Joseph Burson of Limerick afors'd yeoman the Eldest Surviving son of the sd George Burson deceas'd and Rachel his wife; William Burson of Limerick afores'd yeoman another son of the sd George Burson deceas'd;,George Burson of Limerick afores'd yeoman another son of the s'd George Burson deceased; Cuunrod Cunrods late of Germantown in the s'd County yeoman and Ann his wife and Jonas Potts of Limerick afores'd yeoman and Mary his wife (they the s'd Ann & Mary being the daughters of the s'd George Burson dec'd) of the one part AND Harman Indehaven of Limerick afores'd yeoman of the other part…“
It is signed by: Hannah Burson, George Burson; Cunrad Cunrad; Joseph Burson; Rachal {mark RB} Burson; Ann [her mark]; Cunnards; William Burson; Jonas {his mark P} Potts and Mary Potts

The records for all of the above are extant and provide strong evidence that Mary (Unk) Potts was still living as of 1719 and that sometime between 1721 (Mary Burson was unmarried at her sister Anne‘s wedding) and 1727 (the date of the indenture) Jonas married 2nd wife Mary Burson.

This would further indicate that Jonas and his 1st wife Mary Unknown had children David, Rachel, Elizabeth, Hannah, Deborah & possibly Jonathan (if he is, indeed their son); and with his 2nd wife Mary Burson had only son Jonas #2.

In 1722, Jonas Potts was residing in Perkiomen/Gilbert‘s Manor whereon 3 Dec 1722 he signed a Petition for —Joseph Richardson‘s Road“ - a road from French Creek to Philadelphia (Kings Road) as one of the —Inhabitants of Olethgo and neighboring parts“. [Olethgo was on Perkiomen Creek at Providence Twp]. This road ran parallel to another road that ran through Edward Lane‘s land in Perkiomen. It was here that son David Potts would become acquainted with Edward‘s daughter, Elizabeth Lane and marry.

Jonas Potts was in Gilberts Manor from abt 1710 to abt 1731 when he removed to Saucon, Bucks Co. Records indicate he belonged to Perkiomen Preparative Meeting under Gwynedd/North Wales Mtg and circumstantial evidence leads to Mary (Unk) Potts as buried near Providence Twp, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co in the Perkiomen Valley/Gilberts area.

On 23 Aug, 1731 - Jonas Potts of Sackony in the County of Bucks Yeoman & Mary his Wife, Joseph Burson of Sachony (sic) in the County of Bucks, yeoman, & wife Rachel; John Town of the sd Saucony, blacksmith, & wife Sarah; William Burson of the reputed Town of New Bristol near Skippack in the County of Philadelphia, yeoman, & wife Elizabeth; Conrad Conrads of the same place, yeoman, & wife Ann . . . by Deed Poll granted (quitclaimed) unto George Burson. . .170 acres of land in Gilberts Manor (Deed Book I, pg 523-524)

As of 1731, Jonas Potts & wife 2nd wife Mary were still then living and in Saucon, Bucks Co, PA. I have found no evidence to support Jonas Potts as removing to and having died in Loudoun Co, VA.

Post Script regarding Jonathan Potts (1714-1785):
There is no primary evidence to support Jonathan Potts was a son of Jonas or either wife and much speculation has been made regarding his parentage. If he was a son and born in 1714, then he would be of 1st wife Mary as Jonas Potts did not marry 2nd wife Mary Burson until sometime after 1721. A primary source for his birth would resolve this issue, yet I have found none to date.
