Bio: Born approximately a year after a Dutch Reformed Church was established in the Flatlands section of Brooklyn, Steve (aka Stephen) Janse Schenck was buried in its churchyard some 82 years later. The son of Jan Martense Schenck and the former Jannetje van Voorhees*, he married the former Antje Wyckoff on October 23, 1713. A widower at the time of his death, his wife had died 15 months earlier, in July 1766. Mr. Schenck's gravestone, cut from brown sandstone, features a gentle, moon-like soul effigy in its tympanum. The inscription is in the Dutch language.

Will dated 28 January 1688/89 proved 5 Jul 1694. Jan Martensen, presently sickly abed. His wife, Janitie Stevense (Van Voorhees), shall remain in full possession of all estate, moveable and immovable, until the youngest child is of age or married, and then his son, Marten jansen, shall take in his possession the old land with the small Island and mill, and he shall pay every year to his mother, the sum of 600 guilders yearly for life. The youngest son, vis. Steven Jansen, shall have the lot of land in the neck, with the meadow to Hoggs neck, with the apurtenances. The other children shall have as follows, viz.: Steven Jansen shall have 100 pieces of 8. Jannetje Jansen shall have 100 Pieces of 8, and 2 cows, and a bed and a due outfitting, and Willamentie and Neeltje Jansen shall have the same. My wife being at present with child, in case she shall have a son, he shall have the money standing out at New York, being 1,600 gilders. But if a daughter,she shall have no more than the other daughters. Done in Amersfoort, in Kings County, January 28, 1688/89. Signed Jan Martensen Schenck. Will dated 7 June 1758 proved 25 Feb 1768. Steven Schenck, of Flatlands, in Kings County, farmer, being sick. I leave to my wife her support, and house room to live in, and one half of the income of my farm, during the time she remains my widow. I leave to my son John £25, for his birth right. I also leave him £200. To my son Nicholas £200. I leave to my son John all my farm or plantation, houses, and orchards, as now in his possession at Oyster Bay, in Queens County. And he shall pay £200. I leave to my son Nicholas all my lands, meadows, and buildings at a place called Canaristy (Canarsie), in Flatlands, with all houses and buildings. And he shall pay £1000, in four annual payments. If any of my unmarried daughters should be married, they shall have an outset, as my other daughters have had. I leave all the rest of my estate to my 9 children, John, Nicholas, Jannetie, wife of Folkert Spragg, Sara, wife of Abraham Emmans, Antie, wife of Abraham Duryee, Willempthe, wife of Petrus Amerman, Neeltie, Margarite, and Marya. My son John is to have his share first, and I make him and my son Nicholas, executors. Witnesses: Peter Wyckoff, Johannes Lott, Peter Stryker.
