OFFICERS' HEROISM IN GAS-FILLED SHIP'S HOLD.
Vain Efforts To Save Lives Of Chinese.
COLLAPSED FROMCARBON DIOXIDEPOISONING
THE heroic eftorts of two Dutch merchant service officers to save the lives of two Chinese by trying to drag them out of a gas-filled hold in the K.P.M. motor vessel Manipi while on her way to Singapore were descrihed to the Singapore Coroner, Mr. W. G. Porter, yesterday.
One of the officers lost consciousness and was in the words of the Coroner "only just saved himself". The two Chinese were dead when eventually brought up on deck. The officers are Frederick Wilhelm Bismeyer, Chief Officer,
and Evere Jurg, Chief Engineer 'of the Manipi.
The victims, Tan Quee Min, the Manipi's store-keeper, and Lim Bok, a workman, were found to have died from carbon dioxide poisoning.
Bismeyer and Jurg,it was stated, are leaving the ship today on holiday. The Manipi is one of the K.P.M.'s "mosquito
fleet", being only 536 tons gross.
After evidence yesterday the Coroner said that he hoped the efforts of the two Hollanders to save the Chinese would not be overlooked and asked !nspcctor Reddick, who conducted the inquest, to convey a message to the
K.P.M. authorities.
Knew It Was Gas.
Bismiyer stated that he was on the bridge a few minutes before coming into Slngapore when he heard some one call him. He was told that two men had collapsed in the hold. He ran down and saw two Chinese lying at the bottom or the hold. He at once knew that they were suffcated by gas. He immediately picked up a gas mask from anadjoining room but found tbat it was useless because of lack of oxygen. He then asked for rope and after tying himself to it went down, holding his breath. He tried to lift one of the coolies but found the man too heavy so he climbed up again.
He descended into the hold a second time but this time found himself feeling giddy and went up again with the help of a few coolies who pulled him up.
Witness said that after this the chief engineer, Jurg, came and put on the gas mask and after tying the rope round his waist went down into the hold. He took another rope with him.
Jurg Collapses.
Jurg then fastened the rope round one of the men and while doing this he suddenly collapsed and was pulled up to the top.
When brought up he was unconscious and was taken at once to an open space for fresh air, where he regained consciousness after a couple of minutes.
Witness said that when brought up the chief engineer was blue in the face and he was foaming at the mouth.
The two Chinese were then brought up with the aid of ropes attached to which were hooks. It was with great difficulty that they were eventually "hooked" up to the deck.
Certified Dead.
Artiflclal respirotion was administered for a considerable time but the men were certified to be dead by a doctor who came on board.
Asked if he knew how the carbon dioxide came to be in the hold, wltness said he could give no explanation.
Evere Jurg, in evidence, said that it was while adjusting the rope which he had tied round the Chinese that he suddenly lost consciousness. He knew nothing until he came to on the deck.
Further hearing was postponed to a later date.
