From association of names, Robert Knight may have come to America from Shepton
Mallet, Somerset Co., England, where a Samuel Adams and a Tapp family resided,
as also a Robert Knight.
Robert was an early Hampton, NH., settler who moved to Agamenticus (York) prior
to 1642. He bought Robert Blaisdell's house and lands in 1642 and received town
grants in 1648 and 1658. He was active in town affairs and was accorded the
title of respect, "Mr.." In 1668, he took over the care of a grandson, Rowland
Young, Jr. "which boy in time of his lameness Robert Knight took as his own."
His will, dated June 23, 1676, probated Aug. 24, 1676, named his son Richard of
Boston as his heir. Richard sold the land bequeath to him in the will to his
brother Rowland on 15 Feb. 1677.
His children were Richard, b. abt. 1620, d. 1690, a Boston weaver,
who m. Julian or Dinah (Unknown), d. 1690, a niece or grand-daughter of Matthew
Giles of Dover, and had 4 children; Margaret, b. abt. 1622, d. 30 May 1658, who
married John Redman of Dover, who died 30 Apr. 1658 and had 4 children; Daniel,
dates unknown; and Joan, b. abt. 1625, who married Rowland Young.
Robert Knight was not overy litigious, but on 28 June 1655, he did sue Nicholas
Frost for carrying away his newly mown hay; and on 15 Sept. 1668, he was sued by
Dockter Arthar Clapham for "the Expens of Time, Trubell & Chearge & medison"
for treating the lameness of Rowland Young's son which Robert Knight had taken
as his "owne Child" (

1931 v2 p34 167). By 1676 he had moved to Boston where his only son lived
since his will, although written 23 June 1676, was witnessed 24 Aug. 1676 by
Boston men, and recorded 28 Feb. 1678; no inventory reported and only his son

Jr. 12 Aug. 1673, deed witnessed by the boy's sister Mary, who deposed as Mary Mowlton 24 June, 1678."
