James Leroy Crowell, Sr. passed away April 25, 2011 at the age of 76 at his home in Cottonwood. He was born October 18, 1934 In Oakland and moved with his family to Shasta County at five years of age. He attended Red Bluff High School and joined the U.S. Navy in 1954. Upon his discharge in 1957, he returned to Shasta County to begin his family and career. Following in his father's footsteps, he became a painter and eventually started Jim Crowell's Painting Services. An avid outdoorsman, he was a member of the Ducks Unlimited, Shasta County Sportsmen's Association, Tehama Shooters Association and the Moose Lodge. He was also a member of the Northern Free Trappers muzzleloading club. For many years, he was the cook for the N.F.T. and built a reputation for his B-B-Q'ed ribs and tri-tips. Jim is preceded in death by his father, LeRoy Crowell, mother, Marjorie Young, brother Larry Crowell and sister Betty Jean Brown.
Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Linda; sons Roy Crowell, James (Lee) Crowell Jr., Kevin Crowell, Mark Crowell, Eddie Tout, Steven Tout and Robert Crowell; Derek McAllister and Aaron Haley; sister Evelyn Flores and brother Carl Crowell. He also had 16 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and numerous nieces and nephews.
