I will comment on Elyga's work with my own conclusions and thoughts. Some of this is difficult to document and is best evidence. I will attempt to dentify that which is proven and that which is based on evidence.
I believe that Henry, b. 1719, had five sons and one known daughter. There may be more daughters, but they have never been identified. I believe he had John, bd unknown, Barbara, b. abt 1740, Jacob, b. 1744, Henry, b. abt 1746, Joseph, b. abt 1749, and Adam, b. abt 1751. The birthdates given are taken from the IGI and are from earlier researches without their sources noted. Jacob's comes from his pension application. It is commonly believed that all of the children were b. in Germantown, Pennsylvania, however, the family is known to have been in what is now Shenandoah County, Virginia by 1752 when Henry was listed as a chainbearer on a survey crew. Henry died in Shenandoah (present day) in 1754. It appears that after Henry's death, Mrs. Surber took her family to Page County, VA. They are listed there (by middle names) in some church records. Also listed was Barbara Showman.
John is included in the list of children of Henry because he is listed with his brothers Henry and Jacob in a court case for a bad debt. (I don't have the date on that case at hand, but can get it). He married Sarah Thomas in Shenandoah County, VA on Feb 20, 1773. It is believed that this is the same John Surber who is listed in a militia list for the Battle of King's Mountain which includes other men from the Washington County, Virginia area. It appears that John Surber and family moved to Washington County, Virginia shortly after their marriage. There are a large number of Thomas families that also migrated to that area. It is unknown by me how Sarah fits in this family. According to the Aronhime Papers in the Library of Virginia Digital Collection John Surber settled on land SS SFHR nr Robert Edmonton and Palser Rouse in 1772. I believe this to be South Side something of Holston River near Edmonton and Palser Rouse. Adam Sr. is said to have settled settled in land adjt to Nathaniel McClures of Sinclair and Samuel Houston, 1772. So by 1772 these two brothers were in Washington County. http://lvaimage.lib.va.us/cgi-bin/drawerIII/disk8/CC/AR/004/s0050?108
John Surber was also listed in the 1782 and 1787 tax lists for Shenandoah County. He disappears after 1787, but people who must be his descendants remain in the area.
The John Surber who married Margaret Lonas was in Shenandoah County, Virginia on May 4, 1793 when they married--therefore not a part of the
Washington County, Virginia Surbers. The only family of Surbers that remained in Shenandoah County at that time was Jacob. His sons and daughters are mentioned in the Zion Pine Church records together. This John Surber appears to have left Shenandoah County at about the same time as the rest of Jacob's family. It is not known if he traveled with them to Tennessee and on to Highland County, Ohio or not, but he is found in Hamilton County, Ohio in 1820 and in Switzerland County, Indiana in the early 1820's until after 1840 at which time it is assumed he is deceased.
I agree with Elyga that John Surber, husband of Sarah Thomas can not be found in the 1810 census. I believe that he was deceased by that time. There is a John Surber in Washington County at that time, but he is too young to be this John Surber. I believe that he is the son of John and Sarah Thomas Surber. This John has a number of children (unnamed in that census).
At this point, it becomes difficult to determine who the children of John and Sarah actually were. We know that John and Adam Surber were the only two Surber families in that area at that time. Adam's family is well documented via land records and estate settlements. Many of these records have been transcribed in the Vance book. I can quote them if anyone feels that it is necessary. From that list of children, one can take the other Surbers who were living in Washington County, VA at that time and conclude that they must be the descendants of John and Sarah. No list can be complete or certain because no document has been found to date that lists the children. However, my best guess is that they had children: Margaret, Sarah, John, Lydia, James, Unknown Son, and possibly Ann (Ann may also be a wife of John (Jr.)). Unknown Son, thought to be the father of Samuel Surber of Sullivan Co., Tennesse who according to a biographical sketch was from Abingdon, Washington Co., VA and whose father died young.
We do not know the name of John (Jr.)'s wife. I have not found a marriage record to date. We do know that in 1810 he was living in Washington County and had several children. There are a number of marriages of Surber children who are not known to be the descendants of Adam Surber so must be a part of the John Surber/Sarah Thomas line. They include:
Delilah m. Reuben Thomas; Disey m. John Thomas; Debory m. James Denniston; James R. m. Sarah Talbert; John m. Salina Edmondson (moved to Fayette Co., Illinois in 1840); Sarah m. Palser DeBusk; Barbara m. Thomas Long; Adam T. m. Barsheba Right; Ester m. Caleb Neal; Alfred m. Nancy Unknown (moved to Hancock Co., Tennessee in 1850'); Isabella (Isabella, b. 1810) is shown without family in 1850. She may be a widow of an unknown Surber.
As I said, documentation is missing on the John Surber/Sarah Thomas line, so I am open to discussion on this matter.
