Jesse Goodyear was born in New Haven Twp., New Haven Co., CT on 18 Jun 1735, the 8th of 10 children born to Theophilus Goodyear and Esther Sperry (Sperey). On 25 Jun 1761 he married Hannah Bradley of Cheshire (north of Hamden). They had 7 children between 1763 and 1783. Jesse was a Captain in the Revolutionary War and is listed in the CT Militia 1776-1783 in the Regiment of Lt. Col. Sabin. He's also listed in the Misc Rolls as a Captain in the 2nd Militia Regiment. In the 1886 history "Hamden Centennary" we read, "Jesse Goodyear, b. June 18, 1735; d. May 24, 1817, ae. 82; captain; m. June 25, 1761, Hannah Bradley, who d. Apr. 3, 1822, ae. 82. The will of Jesse Goodyear of Hamden names sons Jesse, Joshua, Amos, and daus. Hannah Bassett (Amos), Mabel Ives (Jesse), and Rebecca Gill (Thomas). Joshua had Marcus, Lois and Bede." This same publication cites many Centerville cemetery inscriptions, one reading, "Capt. Jesse Goodyear, d. May 24, 1817, ar 82." Jesse's family can be found in the Hamden, CT federal census through 1810, then in 1820 Hannah, widowed in 1817, is listed as head of household with one other female under 10, which would be her orphaned granddaughter, Lois.
