John Collop's origins have yet to be established. His first confirmed sighting is on 27th March 1720 when he was married at Stotfold in Bedfordshire to Elizabeth Tickle. They went on to have six children baptised at Stotfold between 1721 and 1738, although the first died as a baby. In 1730 John's wife appears to have been the victim of an assault; she was described as "Elizabeth wife of John Collett [sic] Labourer". This is the only evidence found as to John's occupation.
There are two burials of people called John Collop at Stotfold, either (or neither) of which may be this John: one in 1749 and one in 1756.
