1720 Last Will & Testament
In the name of God Amen I Mathew Hanscombe of the Parish of Shillington in the County of Bedford Yeoman being ill of body but of perfect mind and memory blessed be God foe the same therefore do make this my Last Will and Testament as followeth First I commend my soul into the hands of Almighty God my maker hoping by the sole merits of Jesus Christ my only Saviour and redeemer to have all my sins remitted and to be ...? of eternal life for my body I commit to the earth whereof it was made to be buried in such seemly so ..? as my executrix hereafter named shall think fit as for that worldly estate which it hath pleased God to bless me withall I dispose thereof as followeth

Imprimis I give and devise unto Mathew Hanscombe my son the sum of forty pounds of lawful money of Great Britain provided always and upon condition not withstanding that he the said Mathew my son or his executors or administrators do pay to Mary Lawrence of Hitchin widow the sum of forty pounds which I am bound with him in a bond unto her and discharge my executrix hereafter named of and from the said bond

Item I give and devise unto William Hanscombe my son the sum of forty pounds of lawful money of Great Britain to be paid unto him by my executrix hereafter named within one year next after my decease

Item I give and devise unto Elizabeth Ansell my daughter the sum of forty pounds of lawful money of Great Britain to be paid unto him by my executrix hereafter named within one year next after my decease

Item all the rest and residue of my personal estate money goods and chattels unbequeathed my debts legacies and funeral expenses first paid and discharged I give and devise unto Elizabeth my loving wife whom I do make constitute ordain and appoint sole executrix of this my Last Will and Testament revoking all former wills heretofore by me made

In witness whereof I the said Mathew Hanscombe the testator have hereunto set my hand and seal to this my Will contained in one sheet of paper this twelfth day of August 1720 and in the seventh year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George by the grace of God King of Great Britain France and Ireland Defender of the faith sign of Mathew Hanscombe

Signed sealed and declared to be the Last Will and Testament of the said Mathew Hanscombe the testator in the presence of us who subscribed our names as witnesses at the request and in the presence of the said testator William Hanscombe, William Gibbs, sign of Sarah Barnett ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------

Whereas Mathew Hanscombe of Shillington in the County of Bedford Yeoman deceased whilst he lived .. on or about the twelfth day of August last past made his Last Will and Testament in writing and appointed Elizabeth his (then) loving wife sole executrix thereof as in and by the purport of the said Will remaining in the Registry of the Archdeaconry of Bedford doth and may more at large appear and whereas the said Elizabeth departed this life before the said Mathew Hanscombe be her said? husband Now the condition of this obligation is such that if the within bounden Mathew Hanscombe and William Hanscombe the lawful sons and Elizabeth Ansell (wife of the within bounden Michael Hanscombe (sic - should be Michael Ansell as per signature at end) ) the lawful daughter of the said deceased do well and truly administer of the goods chattels and credits of the said Mathew Hanscombe deceased according to the force form and effect of the said Will of the said deceased And also do exhibit a true and perfect Inventory of all the goods chattels and credits of the said deceased into the Registry and pass an accompt of their said administratorship with the said Will annexed when they shall be thereunto lawfully called then the within written obligation to be void or else to remain in full force and virtue.
