Gaucher IV of Mâcon ( 1153 - 04 August 1219 ), also known as Gaucher of Vienne, lord of Salins from 1184 to 1219 , of Maîche and Bourbon.
Gaucher IV of Mâcon is the son of Geraud I of Macon and Maurette, daughter of Gaucher III of Salins . While the seigniory of Salins was united to the county of Macon by the marriage of Geraud I of Macon with Maurette de Salins, it was separated by Gaucher IV who was already lord of Bourbon, during his father's lifetime, by his marriage with Mathilde I of Bourbon , sole heiress of Archambaud de Bourbon . This marriage was of short duration and, with the consent of Pope Celestine III , was annulled in 1196 .
Mathilde remarried with Guy II of Dampierre .
Gaucher left the names of Vienne and Bourbon to take that of Sire de Salins. He remarried with Alix de Dreux. In 1187 it is under this name that he confirms the gifts that his ancestors made to the abbey Notre-Dame de Rosières . Two years later he was forbidding his officers to levy tolls from Cluny's clerics and to levy taxes on them. At the same time he was leaving for the third crusade . He returns in 1193 and gives to the Abbey of Rosiere "half the salt that could make annually a place in the salt - works" in thanks for the fact that it rebuilt the wash - house of Salins. In his acts his seal depicts him on horseback, holding a naked sword in his hand, with the legend Sigilum Walcherii Salinensis Domini and Borboniensis . The reverse of this seal carries the imprint of the head of Jesus Christ with the motto Sigillum Veritatis . In 1199 he raised the hermitage of Mont-du-Fourg to the rank of abbey under the name of Mont-Sainte-Marie .
He died in 1219 and was buried in the church of Goaille (located between Clucy and Bracon ) under a simple slab on which was engraved an inscription in Latin, translated thus by the author of the History of the sires of Salins: This little tomb, in front of this great altar, is buried Gauthier, Lord of Salins & de Bracon, founder of this church, Mont Sainte-Marie and Rosieres, who passed away in the year of Our Lord Incarnation. CC. XIX. The third day of Aoust. Anima ejus requiescat in pace amen = Let his soul rest in peace - Amen. In 1622 the Abbot of Goaille, Bernard Malarmey, had a new monument erected in memory of Gaucher IV with the inscription "Gualcherus Dominus Salinensis, hujus Coenobii Fundator, hic jacet antè Aram Majorem, juxtà Idam Ducissam Lotharingiae sororem suam: Obiit ille anno Domini millesimo ducentesimo decimo nono, tertio nonas Augusti. Utrique hoc monumentum posuit RDBenardus Malarmeus Abbas, anno millesimo, sexcentesimo, vigesimo, secundo = Here lies before the great altar and beside his sister Ida Duchess of Lorraine, Gaucher lord of Salins, founder of this monastery, a hundred and nineteen. Bernard Malarmey, abbot, built this new monument, in one thousand six hundred and twenty-two. "
Marriages and succession:
He married before 1183 Mathilde I of Bourbon , unique heiress of Archambaud de Bourbon and Alix of Burgundy, they divorced in 1195 , in second nuptials marries Alix of Dreux, (1189 - 1258) Daughter of Robert II of Dreux and Yolande de Coucy . From his first marriage he had Marguerite , a lady of Salins.
Out of a relationship outside marriage he has Géraud, Lord of Lemuy.
