Guigues III (approx 1160 - 28 November 1204) was Count of Forez of the house of Albon . He was the son of Count Guigues II of Forez . He succeeded him long before his death and died before him in the holy land.
His first wife was Ascura (about 1165) from which he separated. His second wife was Alix de Sully (approx 1180 - 1207), daughter of Archambaud IV of Sully . Due to the few sources, it is difficult to clearly determine which mother are the following children. The years of birth and the young age of the second wife suggest that the four children are from the first marriage:
Guigues IV , Earl of Forez, who succeeded him.
Marquise de Forez, married Guy VI, Viscount of Thiern
Guigonne Forez, Countess of Vienne of Dauphine and married Géraud II de Mâcon, Count of Mâcon and Vienne sold her rights in Forez in 1230 to his nephew Guigues
Leonor de Forez, married to William VIII of Auvergne
Renaud de Forez, canon of the church of Lyons .
Guigues succeeded his father in 1199 as a count, after he had retired to a monastery as a monk. First he had to face a military conflict with the gentlemen of Beaujeu . He then joined the Fourth Crusade , but did not move with the main army to Venice . He went instead in a Flemish fleet under Juan de Nesle in the spring of 1203 from Marseilles directly to Palestine . Just before he was about to leave he died in 1204 and was buried in Acre .
