Robert was the uncle of Captain Bartholomew Gosnold and his brother Anthony. Their father was Anthony, brother of Robert.
Bartholomew was vice admiral of the London Merchants fleet of three ships that sailed to Virginia on December 20, 1606, arriving in April, 1607. He is considered a primary force in the colonization of Virginia, having obtained a charter for the Virginia Company from King James I to settle Virginia. Unfortunately, he died on August 22, 1607, four months after arrival in Jamestown from malaria.
His brother Anthony drowned, along with a small party from the Jamestown settlement who were attempting to cross the James River to Hog Island in a storm in 1609.
Otley Hall, Suffolk County, was the ancestral home of the Gosnold family. From this area, many of the early Virginia colonists were recruited by Captain Bartholomew to sail to Jamestown.
