Enfant(s):
Guillaume IV of Provence , or William II of Forcalquier , born before1150 and died in 1209 , was Count of Forcalquier on the death of his father, between 1149 and 1151 , until his own death. He was the son of Bertrand I , Count of Forcalquier, and of Josserande de Flotte.
He succeeded his father with his brother Bertrand . During their reign they had to fight against King Alfonso I of Provence (King of Aragon under the name of Alfonso II), Count of Provence , who sought to extend to the north.
In 1162, the King of Aragon obtained against William a sentence of the Germanic Emperor, who reproached him for not paying homage . This sentence was lifted on December 12, 1174, after Guillaume had moved with great pomp to Roveredo , surrounded by his followers. This imperial precept recognizes him as a direct vassal of the Emperor. He therefore rejected the requests for submission of the King of Aragon and Count of Provence. In 1177 or 1178, Alfonso of Aragon crossed the Durance , captured Pertuis , then crossed the Luberon by Montfuron and besieged Forcalquier. It is ultimately an ecclesiastical arbitration which makes it possible to put an end to the hostilities. The treaty of submission was signed at Sault, and Guillaume refused to involve his direct suzerain, Frederic Barbarossa , who had come to be crowned at Arles (July 30) and to Gap (August 15).
He paid homage to Alfonso I's brother, Sanche , who was sent to govern the county of Provence in 1181. In 1183, Guillaume IV supported him in his treason against the king of Aragon, which was of no consequence to him when Alfonso II deposed Sanche, in 1185.
Without heirs, Guillaume IV hesitated about ten years on the recipients of his inheritance, making several times flip-flopping. He signed a treaty of alliance with Raymond V of Toulouse, stipulating that if one of the contractors died without heirs, his domains would go to the other (1191). In July 1193 , he signed two treaties:
The first arranges the marriage of his heiress Garsende of Sabran , with the son of Alphonso;
The second is a treaty of military alliance, Guillaume IV providing as a pledge the three places of Aubignosc , Montjustin and Vitrolles (held two years by knights designated for this purpose).
In addition, the treaty provided for the devolution of the county to Alfonso I on the death of Guillaume, with the exception of a few castles ( Cucuron , La Motte, Asse, Robion , Ventavon , Upaix , Lazer, He finally signed an agreement with Raymond VI of Toulouse in 1195, which revoked the precedent and clearly demarcated their possessions and put an end to the system of joint ownership between the two counties.
Taking advantage of the death of Alfonso I and the youth of his successor, he rejected previous acts of submission. On the death of his known suzerain, he delivered a speech on the steps of Our Lady of Forcalquier, proclaiming his independence on the basis of the Imperial precept of 1174. Allied with the Baux, the Counts of Toulouse, the Princes of Orange and the Viscounts of Marseilles, he began the hostilities and ravaged the country of Aix in 1199. The lords allied however fail to take the city. In 1202, he joined the dauphin of the Viennese , marrying his granddaughter and giving him the counties of Gap and Embrun, all the northern part of the county, to the bridge of Sisteron. The castles of Redortiers and L'Argentiere are left as pledges 10 . The strategic city of Sisteron was taken by Alphonse II the same year. In 1203, during a truce, he proclaimed with his enemy a Peace of God protecting "churches, clerics traveling unarmed, herds and servants of churches, abbeys of white monks and black monks, Templars , Hospitallers , The canons regular, [...] leprosaria , etc. ". But the two brothers were again beaten by the Catalans and had to submit. Bertrand died in 1207 and Guillaume in 1209.
He had married Adelaide de Beziers , probably of the Trencavel family and had issue:
Garsende († before 1193), married in 1178 to Rainier de Sabran , lord of the Caylar and Ansouis, who had:
Garsende (1180 † 1242), Countess of Forcalquier, married in 1193 to Alfonso II of Aragon , Count of Provence and Forcalquier;
Raimond Berenger IV of Provence Count of Provence and Forcalquier;
Garsende, married to William II of Moncade , Viscount of Béarn ;
Beatrix, married in 1202 to Guigues VI of Burgundy , dauphin of the Viennois .
