BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES ON RIVER HILL COTTAGES "I have started to get interested in Riverhill Cottages and their history. On one of my early visits to Underriver, I went to look for the cottages, expecting to find the usual terrace of Victorian workers cottages. I was surprised to find a motley collection of quite large buildings, not even in a straight line (with some even behind others), that looked as if they had been put up at different times. Looking through the censuses, it seems that this was precisely what happen. They must have been erected as required by the Riverhill estate, for the use of their workers. In 1841 there appear to have been just 2 buildings, simply at "Riverhill", one of which was occupied by the Dunks family, the other by Michael & Maria Ranger - they appear to have had one of her family with them, Harriett (26), presumably a sister. By 1851, the Dunks were at "St Julian's Sheppards Lodge" (he was a shepherd), then come the lodge gates (occupied by the Bailiff), then Riverhill Cottage (the Rangers), then "Black Mont (?) Lodge Gate, then another Riverhill Cottage (Rolleson). By 1861, the Rangers were at 1 St Julians Road, but I guess this is still the same place. Next comes Upper Lodge Black Mont (?), Gardeners Rooms Riverhill Cottage, then another Riverhill Cottage (the Clarke family, with private income and a housemaid, Keziah Potter, 35, b. Sundridge). By 1871 the Clarkes are still there, and the Rangers 3 doors away, but then there are another 2 "Riverhill Cottages", one uninhabited (which suggests they might only just have been built?). In 1881, the cottages are not named as such, but in "Fawke Common Road" there are 6 houses, which would seem to be the same place, though Henry T. appears to have taken over his father's cottage (and has another family with him), while Michael has moved 2 doors away. By 1891, there are 8 cottages, numbered 1-8, with Henry at No. 5 - Nos. 4 & 8 are unoccupied, so may, again, have been recently built. In 1901, the 8 cottages are unnumbered, but the Rangers appear to be in the same place. When I get a chance, I'll take a look at the old OS maps, to see if they back this story up. I must also check back on the Electoral registers, to see what light they can shed" SOURCE email from Simon Ranger Hill 23/12/2006
