Enfant(s):
William Montagu was an English nobleman and courtier of King Edward II. He was the son of Simon de Montagu, 1st Baron Montacute (d.1316) and Hawise St. Amand. William's marriage to Elizabeth Montfort was arranged by Eleanor of Castile,the first wife of King Edward I of England. The Montagu family was a West Country family with roots going back to the Conquest, who held extensive lands in Somerset, Dorset and Devon. William distinguished himself in the Scottish Wars of Edward I, and served as steward of the household of Edward II. Some of the members of the nobility, including Thomas of Lancaster, viewed Montagu with suspicion, he believed William had to much influence on the king. For this reason he was sent to Aquitaine, to serve as seneschal. He died there in October 1319. He was succeeded by his son William, who was closely associated with Edward III, and was created Earl of Salisbury. SOURCE: www.findagrave.com
