1841 aged 20, grocer living at Church Lane, Enfield Town with his wife Charlotte 25, and children Arthur 2 and Emma 3 months.
William (1817) was convicted at Old Bailey, London on 06 Jul 1846 of stealing sovereign from mail (where he worked as letter carrier) and sentenced to 10 yrs. He was transported on the 'Anna Maria' and arrived New Norfolk on 07 Jun 1848. He was given permission to marry a Sarah Robertson (herself a convict) and they did so at St Davids Church, Hobart Town on 24 Apr 1849 - he was recorded as a "butcher" - the profession of his father. They were both subsequently given pardons in 1853 and had a son William James Lee in Hobart on 08 Mar 1853.
Sarah Robertson (b:1827) was convicted in Edinburgh on 16 Mar 1847 of shoplifting and sentenced to 10 yrs. Her records indicate she was a native of Greenock (not substantiated). She was transported on 'Cadet' arriving New Norfolk 02 Jan 1848.
After his pardon William Lee spent more time away from Hobart and the family story said he had a gold mine in Victoria. But supposedly Sarah found out he was visiting his "first wife Charlotte" - this is not substantiated and I can find no definitive record of his further wherabouts or death.
Sarah subsequently married (as Sarah Anne Robinson) a James Reynolds at St Georges Church, Hobart on 28 April 1856 as they had their first child Catherine Robina Reynolds on 10 November 1855. There were further children of this union - James John and Frances Bradley
William Lee's sons William Arthur and Alfred William both sailed on 'Netherby' from London on 01 Apr 1866 but ship was wrecked on King Island, Tasmania on 14 July 1866 with no loss of life. They were subsequently to arrive in Brisbane in August via Melbourne. Alfred William Lee married in Brisbane to Catherine McKay and they had a large family - he died in 1936. His brother died in Hotham, Victoria in 1912.
