Geoffrey Boleyn was a son of Geoffrey Boleyn and Alice Brackton. He married Anne, daughter of Thomas, Lord Hoo and Hastings. He was Lord Mayor of London, and owner of Bickling Hall, Norfolk. He was great grandfather to Queen Anne Boleyn (d.1536) and great great grandfather to Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603). Hever Castle was acquired by Sir Geoffrey Boleyn, a succesful hatter and Lord Mayor of London, in 1462. The three-storey gatehouse is massive, and the building well-preserved. The first Bullen to live at Hever, Geoffrey, rose from humble mercer's apprentice to Lord Mayor of London in 1459, was knighted, made his fortune and bought Blickling Hall in Norfolk as well as Hever Castle in Kent. His success set his family on the path that would eventually bring it both glory and disaster within a few short years. It was the marriage of Geoffrey's grandson, Thomas, to Elizabeth, daughter of the powerful Duke of Norfolk, that propelled the family into the limelight. Each of their three surviving children, George, Mary and Anne, was to become a pawn in the one-sided game played out in the bedchamber of the despotic Henry VIII. ["Castle of Dreams", REALM, Sept/Oct 1998] Geoffrey Boleyn, who d. 1471, was the first member of the family to make a name for himself. A mercer by trade, he became an alderman of the City of London in 1462, and Lord Mayor in 1457. By then he was a wealthy man, having purchased the manor of Blicking in Norfolk from Sir John Fastolf in 1452, and a 200-year-old castle at Hever in Kent in 1462 . His wife, Anne, was the daughter of Lord Hoo and Hastings , and his marriage to her was of great social value; he now mixed with the local gentry--such as the Paston family--and the lesser nobility, and even with the much more exalted Howard family. It was probably through their influence that Geoffrey was knighted by Henry VI. [The Six Wives of Henry VIII, p. 145] Sir Geoffrey Boleyn held the office of Lord Mayor of London from 1457to 1458.
