Jérôme or Hieronymus is a Carolingian count and a natural son of Charles Martel ( 685 - 741 ) and of an unknown concubine, named as Ruodhaid in Wikipedia: Hieronymus (d. after 782), was the son of Charles Martel and his mistress Ruodhaid, and so was the brother of Bernard, Abbot of St. Quentin, a key confidant of Louis the Pious, and Remigius, the third Archbishop of Rouen. In 754, Hieronymus was tasked with Fulradus, abbot of St. Denys, and others, to escort Pope Stephen II back to Rome. This was following King Pipin's victorious campaign against his archenemy Aistulf, King of the Lombards. He became lay abbot of the monastery of St. Quentin in the diocese of Noyon. He was succeeded by his son Fulrad.

He studied in a monastery where, aided by a monk, at nine years he copied the life of his ancestor Saint Arnoul de Metz . Becoming a count in adulthood, he was commissioned by his brother, King Pepin the Short of several missions, as escorting Pope Stephen II returning from a visit to Pepin. In 775 , he is one of the signatories of a plaid of Charlemagne in Thionville . Fulcuin, his descendant, affirms that he was an important personage of the royal entourage. He then became abbot of Saint-Quentin.

Marriage and Children
The Life of Saint Folcuin , Bishop of Thérouanne (816-855), stated that he was the son of Jerome and Ercheswinda, a noble goddess, and named among his brothers Fulrad, Abbot of Saint-Quentin. But the Gesta abbatum Sanci Bertini Sithiensium indicate that Folcuin is the brother of Audouen (ancestor of Fulcuin, monk of Saint-Bertin) and the son of Jerome and Ermentrude.

The difficulty is solved by the hypothesis that Jerome had two wives.
First Ermentrude, who could be Fulrad's niece († 16 July 784 ), abbot of Saint-Denis, and who gives birth to 5 :
Audouen or Ouen, ancestor of another Audouen, father of Regenwala († av. 928) and of
Fulcuin († av. 928), monk in Saint-Bertin. This Fulcuin is himself the father of another Fulcuin, abbot of Lobes from 965 to his death in 990.
Fulrad († 826), abbot of Saint-Quentin in 771, and abbot of Lobbes in 823
a daughter, mother of Rameric († 823), abbot of Lobbes.

Secondly to Ercheswinda, a noble and perhaps descendant of one of the Reccared, king of the Visigoths, who gives birth to
Folcuin , bishop of Thérouanne from 816 to 855).

perhaps Richard the count of Rouen in 783 and in 795, and possible ancestor of the Bivinides

Settipani suggests that Boso of Provence descended from Hieronymus, although there does not appear to be any real evidence to support this.
