History of Johnson County, p. 771:
"D. Flournoy Sansom, another son of R.P. Sansom was born in Madison County in 1851. He learned the cattle business at an early age from his father and the cowhands around Alvarado. In the spring of 1869, Flournoy at the age of 18 started out on the second cattle drive ever attempted to California from Texas, joining a party of eight men with 1500 head of cattle starting from an area southeast of Alvarado. Flournoy had saved up enough money to buy 100 head of the best two and three-year old steers at $5 to $6 a head to add to the drive.
Though they encountered many hardships -- Indians, at times being short of
water in the desert country and grass for the cattle, they finally arrived in
California in fall of 1870 with about two-thirds of the original herd; but
after they grazed all winter they were in prime condition when they reached the government buyers at the fort near San Francisco, where they sold the herd at a satisfactory price. The divided the proceeds of sale according to the number of cattle each man had started with. Sansom-like, Flournoy made money ranching around Alvarado, but later moved to Plainview, Texas to acquire better range and more acreage. He married Anna Knox, a native of Illinois. To them four children were born: Robert, Nell, Roy and Elmer. Elmer and his wife, Wilbur Sansom had one son, David Flournoy, and three daughters, Mary Earle, Wilbur Lou, and Virginia (who married Ruel Walker of Cleburne, formerly Judge of the Texas Supreme Court in Austin)."
