The descent of the manor of Toddington is still partly obscure. Its earlier owners have been discussed by one of the present Editors;112 from the Domesday holder, Ernulf de Hesding, it passed with his (supposed) dau. Matilda to Patric I de Chaworth (de Cadurcis, modern Sourches), who made grants in certain parts of the manor of Toddington which eventually devolved on the Priory of Dunstable; these were confirmed in charters of later date by his dau. in law Wiburga, by his grand-sons Payn I de Chaworth (or de Montdubleil) and Hugh de Chaworth, and by his great grand-son Patric III de Chaworth who is found at the extreme end of the 11th century;113 this family are evidently the real lords of Toddington.
