To son-in-law Joshua Baldwin piece of ground along north side of Conestogoe Road paying to Executors £25. Having given to son William dwelling house and grist mill where he now lives and 150 acres in Bart Twp., Lancaster Co., I now give him his bond for £50. To son Joseph plantation in East Caln containing 492 acres purchased of Saml. Gilpin, also remainder of tract bought of Noble Butler containing between 50 and 60 acres in East Caln, also farming utensils. To son-in-law Saml. Bond tract of land in Whiteland known by the name of Thos. Blandfords. To son Richard grist and fulling mill in East Caln with tract of land belonging containing 230 acres, also water right reserved in deed of land to son John. Saw and hemp mill in East Caln to sons Richard, Joseph and John and son-in-law Saml. Bond in equal shares. To daughter Jane wife of John Roberts £50 having already advanced her. To son-in-law Saml. Bond £50. Having already advanced my dau. Sarah Baldwin deceased, I now give my grand-dau. Sarah Baldwin £50. To Mary dau. of Thos. Alcott late of East Caln deceased £20 at 21. Thomas Downing, the son of Thomas Downing and Grace Andrew, of Bradninch, Devonshire, England, was born on 14 Dec 1691. Thomas md. Thomazine BEER, and they removed to Concord Township, PA, bef. 1718. He was a founder of Downingtown, PA, a Welsh settlement. He settled on the east branch of Brandywine Creek and was a farmer, miller, and merchant. He was a Friend (Quaker), and was a member of the Falls, Birmingham, Wilmington, and Baltimore Friends Meetings. There is reason to think that while in Concord he operated a mill belonging to Nathaniel Newlin, and he and his descendants continued to be mill owners at Downingtown for several generations.

Syndication "One immigrant came from Devonshire. He was Thomas Downing, and a member of the Society of Friends. Pennsylvania was naturally the place he chose for a home. Downingtown is the name of the town he helped settle, and the old homestead still stands" (Newspaper article, ca. 1940)

The Devonshire Downings prepared by John Perot, Ardmore, PA, put
together from the entries in the parish records of Bradninch, Devonshire,
England, in 1901 an 1903: "Thomas Downing, son of Thomas Downing, born
14 Dec 1691, and was bapt. 6 Jan 1691-92, at Bradninch. The
Bradninch records show that a Thomas Downing married Judeth Bending on 2 Jun 1717. Judeth [sic], wife of Thomas Downing, was bur. 26 Jan 1723.
According to the Downingtown records, "his first wife was said to have
been named Ellen, and his second Tomazine, who was perhaps the mother to all his children. In Dec 1756 he md. Jane Alborne (o' Albin)." There
seems to be some error here, unless he had two wives bef. Tomazine;
Ellen and Judeth. Thomas Downing came to Pennsylvania bef. 1718, where
he was taxed in Concord township from 1718 to 1732; later moving to
Downingtown, where he died age 81. The Downingtown records say that two of his children were born in England and the Bradninch records show the births of a Thomasine (1715) and Thomas (1717)."

Thomas was born in 1691 in Devonshire, England and lived in Wales and Chester County, Pa. He founded Downingtown, a Welsh settlement. He settled on the east branch of Brandywine Creeek and was a farmer, miller, and merchant. He was a Friend (Quaker) and a member of Falls, Birmingham, Wilmington and Baltimore Friends meetings.

The g-g-g-grandson of John Downynge was Thomas Downing (1691 - 1772), who emigrated from Devonshire to Chester county, Pennsylvania in Aug 1717. A member of the Society of Friends (Quakers), he established a mill on the Brandywine River. The area became known as Milltown, but in the late 1700s became called Downings Town; and finally in the mid 1800s it became the borough of Downingtown.
