Humphrey de Bohun, 7th Earl of Hereford, 6th Earl of Essex and 2nd Earl of Northampton (1342 – 16 Jan 1373) was an important medieval English noble during the reign of King Edward III of England.
Lineage
He was the son of William de Bohun, 1st Earl of Northampton, and Elizabeth de Badlesmere. His paternal grand-parents were Humphrey de Bohun, 4th Earl of Hereford and Elizabeth of Rhuddlan, dau. of King Edward I. His maternal grand-parents were Bartholomew de Badlesmere, 1st Baron Badlesmere and Margaret de Clare. He was the last of this de Bohun line, but his titles should have been passed to his successor who was his second cousin.
Inheritance
On his death, his great estates were divided between his two surviving daus.: Mary de Bohun, who md. Henry Bolingbroke, the future Henry IV and Eleanor de Bohun, who md. Thomas of Woodstock. His third dau., Elizabeth, had died young.
His wife and the mother of his dau. was Joan Fitzalan, dau. of Richard Fitzalan, 10th Earl of Arundel and Eleanor of Lancaster, whom he md. aft. 9 Sep 1359.
These estates went to the husbands of the dau. of Humphrey even though there was a male heir alive in Hereford unt. 1381 - his name is Gilbert de Bohun - who md. Margaret Wastney, great-grand-daughter of Robert Fitzrobert, and they had a dau. called Joan who md. Walter Weaver in 1362 and had male issue.
Henry IV was created Duke of Hereford before he usurped the throne.
