Il est marié avec Margaret Adams.
Ils se sont mariés environ 1736 à Mount Bethel, Northampton, Pennsylvania, British AmericaThree Churches.
Old Ephriam McDowell (b. 1672 d. abt 1770) and a brother (whom I believe was the Joseph McDowell b. 1668 d. 1737 New London township,
Chester Co., PA) m. Ann Vans/Vance came to America (c 1729-1731) with several other members of the McDowell and related families of Gleno, Raloo Parish, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. (Ephriam's wife Margaret Irvine McDowell d. 1728 is buried at Cross Hill, Raloo Churchyard.) The related families in Gleno, Raloo Parish, County Antrim, Northern Ireland include: Blairs, McDowells, McElroys, McNeelys, Irvines, Campbells, McCunes, Brice (aka Bruce), Lyles, Lockes, Knox. Members of these same families continue coexisting with the McDowells in PA, MD and into VA/NC.
The year 1737 seems to be a pivotal year for the McDowells in America:
(1) Joseph of Chester Co., MD dies,
(2) Ephriam and sons John and James, and daughters Mary Elizabeth McDowell Greenlee (wife of James Greenlee) and Margaret McDowell (Mitchell) left PA and came to VA.
(3) Robert McDowell m. Margaret and family (who are apparently traveling with old Ephriam) also leave PA for VA. (4) Charles McDowell m. Rachel and family leaves PA or MD and arrives in VA.
All three families (Ephriam, Charles, Robert) are referenced in old Orange
Co., VA records beginning in that year (1737). Charles settles on the Joist
Hite grant in the area of Winchester, Frederick (old Orange) Co., VA and
Ephraim and Robert continue further down into the Beverly grant and Borden grant lands of the Shenandoah Valley, receiving VA Headrights in 1739 (Orange Co. Court of Common Pleas).
Charles McDowell shares a relationship with William McDowell (b. abt 1705 d. 1738) of Martin's Delight, Conowingo Co., MD. Charles is recorded as a
planter there in 1731. This William also shares a relationship with Isaac McDowell (m. Minerva) of Perth Amboy DE/NJ. Isaac willed land to William's
sons. Robert McDowell shares a relationship with Charles and receives a land
grant near Charles in Anson Co., NC in April/May of 1754 prior to Charles'
death (Charles removed from VA to Anson Co., NC in abt 1750).
In addition, Mary McDowell (widow of James McDowell d. 1747 of Derry
Township, Lancaster Co., PA) removes with her children from PA to NC and
receives a grant near Charles' family and Robert McDowell on Sugaw Creek,
Anson Co., NC. Other members of this family include John McDowell m. Rachel of PA. This John McDowell, Jr. was the administrator of Joseph McDowell (d. 1737) estate in New London, Chester Co., PA. Joseph had been appointed John's guardian in PA, after the death of John Sr. A John McDowell (possibly this John Sr.) and Ruth Roberts McDowell (widow of William McDowell of Martin's Delight) are both buried in Christ Church Burying Ground in Philadelphia. Charles' brother Joseph McDowell (b. 1715 d. 1771) (mentioned in Charles will) later removes from the Winchester, VA area to NC in 1763.
Joseph (b. 1717) had remained in VA as a LT. later Capt. of the VA militia
(serving under Maj. Geo. Washington)during the French and Indian Wars,
after which he also removed to NC. The NC McDowells owned land on Sugar
Creek, Rocky Creek, Steel Creek, Dutch Buffalo Creek, McDowell's (later
Lambert's) Creek, and Allison's Creek in southern NC.
Ephriam and his immediate family remained in VA at Timber Ridge, Rockbridge Co., NC but his descendants intermarried with the NC families and some removed there, including McDowells, Greenlees, Moffatts, and Irvines (Irwins). (Other related PA/VA/NC families included the Alexanders, Woods, Campbells, Lyles, Smiths, Prestons, Pattons, Paxtons, McClures, McClearys, Allisons, Houstons, Davidsons, and Brevards). If you look at the PA McDowell, Irwin (Irvine), Woods, families, the same intermarriage and
migration patterns existed there as well with those (who did not leave PA
for VA and NC).
The will of Ephraim Mc Dowell, made in Bedminster, Somerset, NJ names sons John, Ephraim, Matthew, Peter, wife Margaret
Matthew Adams had daughters Elizabeth, Mary Simonton, Peggy
