"Mrs. May Buckner, Longtime Resident, Dies Early Tuesday
"Mrs. May Middleton Buckner, a resident of Waxahachie for almost seventy
years, died at _____ a.m. today at her home, ___ Oldham, after a long illness.
"Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Rudolph Chapel of
the Chimes, with the Rev. Donald Y. Swain, pastor of the Central Presbyterian
Church officiating. Burial will follow in the City Cemetery.
"Mrs. Buckner, widow of the late U.T. Buckner, Sr., and eldest daughter of
the late Mr. and Mrs. T.J. Middleton, was born Sept. 17, 1872, at Winchester,
Tenn. She moved to Texas with her parents in 1879. In 1887, her father, who
had taught school in various Texas towns, brought his family to Waxahachie
where he became editor and publisher of the Ellis County Mirror.
"She joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church here when it was located on
the site of the present City Hall. She was one of the oldest members of the
Central Presbyterian Church, and in her active years, she worked in the Woman's
Association and the Philathea Class of the church. She was one of the early
members of the Shakespeare Club.
"Mrs. Buckner attended Mrs. Speer's School for Girls, an early-day woman's
college, located west of the site now occupied by Marvin Elementary School. In
1902, she taught a private kindergarten school in Amarillo. She later taught
at Texas Female Seminary in Weatherford, a Cumberland Presbyterian college for
girls. In 1905, she was a private tutor in the home of the late Mr. and Mrs.
John M. Harrison.
"On Jan. 30, 1907, she was married to Ulysses T. Buckner, Sr. who preceded
her in death Jan. 8, 1937.
"One son, U.T. Buckner, Jr., survives and lives at the home address. She is
also survived by two brothers, M.S. Middleton and Montgomery Middleton of
Waxahachie; three sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Powell of Amarillo, and Mrs Maude Wilson
and Miss Mattie Middleton of Waxahachie, and several nieces and nephews."
