"MRS. IRENE SLAGLE
"Irene Sophia Brown was born near Rochester, Minn., and passed away at her
home in Glen Elder, KS., on Oct. 21, 1949, at the age of 90 years, 11 months
and 3 days.
"She spent her girlhood days in Minnesota and near Leavenworth KS., moving
to Jewell county, KS., in the year of 1876.
"On Jan. 7, 1878, she was united in marriage with Clayton David Slagle, and
to this union four children were born: Blanche Ruth, Jennie, Lawrence
Wellington, and Crystal Irene. Her husband, Blanch Ruth Sipe and Lawrence
preceded her in death.
"She united with the Methodist Church when a small girl, and lived most of
her life in Jewell and Mitchell counties. With her parting, Glen Elder loses a
beautiful character and one of its earliest pioneers.
"She is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Jennie Ault of Glen Elder and Mrs.
Crystal Luckey of Kansas City, Mo.; eight grandchildren; thirteen great
grandchildren; two sons-in-law; several nieces and nephews and a host of
friends.
"Funeral services were held in the Thomasson Funeral Home Oct. 23, 1949, at
2:00 p.m., Rev. C.A. Kemp officiating. Interment was at Athens cemetery.
"Music was furnished by: Ambrose Casey, Melvin Harrison, Mrs. Cecil German
and Miss Elsie Hepperly, with Mrs. Mae Barnett at the piano.
"Pall bearers were: Fred Remus, Earl Shoemaker, Austin Davidson, Corwin
Sorrell, Heber Gish, Ralph McFarland.
"Mrs. Marie Ray, Mrs. Earl Cave and Mrs. Art Newquist cared for the
flowers."
