Agnes and William remained in Scotland when other members of the David Mitchell family emigrated to America. The Irvine family spent their entire lives near Newdeer, Aberdeenshire, Scotland where they owned and operated a large farm called "Mains of Drum." THE FOLLOWING IS A LETTER WRITTEN BY AGNES MITCHELL IRVINE TO NELLIE MITCHELL DAMON. (Courtesy of Nellie Damon Stuart): (Auchreddie Cottage) 26 June 1916 My dear Sister: I was so pleased to have your letter but quite shocked to hear of Maggies (Margaret Mitchell Minty) death. I have not heard from Sofie, (Sophia Mitchell Scott) this year and she is the only one who writes me. I just heard of Louisa's (Louisa Mitchell Imlah) death from Mrs. Roy, who was Maggie Imlah. But no word from America. You see, we are getting so few letters now, was quite astonished your letter came of course it was censored. There are so few come from the boys (Alex, John and Jimmie Irvine) in America, though they write regular. John's wife did not get her parcel at Xmas. I suppose it went to the bottom of the sea. Jimmie did not get his either. It was real disappointing. I commenced this letter over a month ago, since then I have been away first to the hills and then to the sea. I was much better from being at the sea but it was so stormy and cold. I am just recovering from a long illness. I took bad after the new year with my heart and liver. Ethyl, my youngest girl came from the hospital to nurse me. She stayed a month and went back, but I had another bad turn not the same. 25 years ago I had a bad operation and part was left and it has broken out again so Ethel has been home for over three months. The doctors wanted another operation, but I said I was too old so I can walk with the help of a staff, but I need help to get off of a chair. I think if I keep on Ethyl will get back next month. I can tell you I am grateful to be as I am. Kate, my other daughter, is nursing the wounded soldiers. She has been a nurse for over 14 years in England. She has charge of a hut and has always seventy two cases all surgical. She is so thin and tired looking, she has been twice home for four days since the war broke out. She has seen awful sights but tells little. Alex, my youngest boy, is in Montana doing well. John is in Minnesota. He is married and has two girls and a boy. Jimmie is in Washington, he has four boys. Bill, a grandchild, is with his Uncle Alex. William is in Mains of Drum and married not. I left Drum over a year ago. I was not able for the change. There were 20 cows and you know that means work. I live in Newdeer and am so comfortable. I have a big house far too big as I pay over 10 pounds for it, but it is in a good locality as it is both in the village and in the country too. My old neighbors and friends get to see me. David lives at _______, a farm about a mile from Drum, un married. Nellie married and is living about four miles from Newdeer on a farm. Her only boy is in France. She has one girl, a chemist at Duff House. Maggie married and lives near Burnt, has one boy so I haven't many grandchildren, but more than you. I was so glad to hear from the rest. They are getting fewer. Has there not been a great many deaths since mother died. I have nont heard from Jim for more than a year. Susan stayed for three months at Drum four years ago. She inherited over a thousand pounds and came home for it. Jim was always to come but never did. Now be sure to write me again. You have on idea how it pleases me to get your letter and news all about the others. I had a letter from _____ after Jimmie's death, but have never heard since. Will you ever come and see Scotland? Do you mind on anybody? This is a terrible time with the war. Wish it were over. With love to all I mind on you ofterner now, before as I have more time. I remain your loving sister, Aggie.
