Jeanne |
Son of Robert Curthose, duke of Normandy, who had been deposed and imprisoned by his youngest brother, Henry I of England in 1106. From 1116 to 1120 William was backed by Louis VI of France in reclaiming Normandy, but Louis' efforts on his behalf were foiled by Henry I's diplomatic encounters with Pope Calixtus II; further attempts to win back the duchy in 1122-23 were frustrated by Henry's vigorous military actions. In 1127 William was married to Jeanne, a half-sister of Louis' wife, and was given the Vexin as her dowry. Later that year Louis attempted to impose William as count on the Flemish, a group of whom had murdered their ruler, Count Charles the Good. William met considerable opposition from Thierry of Alsace, the rival claimanat, and died in 1128 from a wound received at the siege of Alost.
