      1218-1282. Son of William de Cantilupe, 2nd baron. Chancellor of Oxford University (1262-63); chancellor of England (1264-65) under Henry III; bishop of Hereford (1275-82).

      A papal chaplain in the 1240s, and an eminent lawyer. Thomas studied at the university of Paris and at Orleans, then went to Oxford to teach comon law in 1255. With his uncle Walter Cantilupe, bishop of Worcester, he supported Simon de Montfort's party opposing Henry III. Elected bishop of Hereford in 1275, he was conscientious in his cure of souls. He died in Orvieto while appealing against his excommunication over bitter jurisdictional disputes with John Pekham, archbishop of Canterbury. Buried in Hereford Cathedral, he was canonized in 1320 as St Thomas of Hereford, after miracles had occured at his tomb.
