Donald Goodman, affectionately known as Goodie on Salt Spring, came to the island as one of Henry Bullock’s boys (see Henry Bullock collection for details).
In the early 1900’s, the Goodman family fell on hard times. An alcoholic father, an marital estrangement and the death of Mrs. Goodman to tuberculosis, found all four of the children placed in orphanages, two in Britain and two in B.C.
Goodie was brought to Salt Spring to work for Mr. Bullock. He worked on Bullock’s farm from 1922 to 1926 when he left to try his hand at other things. Goodie was a porter on the Island Princess, harvested wheat in the interior of B.C., worked for the Gulf Islands Trading Company, ran the Shell station until 1954 and, for many years, did the job for which he is most well known on the island, that of undertaker.
Donald Goodman married Isabel Howard in 1934 and they had three children.
