be associated with the farm Babylonstoren. When her husband Pieter van der
Byl was exiled in Holland she demonstrated in public against the policies of the
Governor WA van der Stel. She managed her husbands portfolio of six large
farms from 1723 till her death in 1743. The illustration above shows
fashionable women's clothing of the period, probably made by Jurgen
Leeuwenberg who was stationed at the Cape in 1740.Her life
Hester Terwinkel was born in Zutphen in 1673, the daughter of Lambert
Terwinkel and Anna Rietmoly. She was already 29 when she married the
widower Pieter van der Byl in 1702. There is no evidence or suggestion that
she had been married before, so it seems she was on the shelf. He had four
children and together they would have six more between 1703 and 1714.In 1723 Pieter died. She was then aged 50 and she seems to have handled the
family landholdings herself. Nine years later, in September 1732, she acquired
an additional grant at Babylonstoren. She must have used managers on her
distant farms (perhaps sons or sons-in-law). According to Margaret Cairns, at
Babylonstoren her manager was Johannes Louw - the next purchaser. When she died in December 1743 she was aged 70. Besides the main farms of
Vredenburg and Babylonstoren, their descendants were by then the owners of
Libertas (daughter Maria Sophia married de Vos), Brakelsdal (daughter
Geertruy married van Brakel), Joostenberg (daughter Anna married Brand),
and Klawervallei (son Pieter). Two daughters had married ministers and
another the Landdrost of Stellenbosch. Her grandchildren would own
Rustenberg at Idas Valley (granddaughter Anna Elisabeth married Eksteen),
Kromme Rhee and Spier (grandson Andries Christoffel), Meerlust Faure
(granddaughter Hester Anna married Myburgh), Welmoed Lynedoch (Pieter
Gerhard), and other places .A slice of life
Anna Boeseken, who has studied Van der Byl's life, also mentions his forceful
wife. During Van der Bijls absence in the Netherlands his wife Hester
continued the battle against Johannes Starrenburg, who was a friend of Van
der Stels, and on 18.9.1706 she and the wife of Wessel Pretorius
demonstrated against Starrenburg in public.
