The Ratcliff family in Lancashire, England, descended from Sir Nicholas de Fiitz-Gilbert de Tailbois (Talbot). His great-grandfather, Ivo de Tailbois, was a Norman knight who invaded England with Williams the Conqueror. For meritorious service in wars in Scotland, the King gave Sir Nicholas the manor of Radcliffe. He was then known as Sir Nicholas de Radcliffe, which became the family surname. During the years it has changed form, and our branch uses the Ratliff form. The only remaining evidences of the manor are the church and the ruins of the tower. The Radcliffe Tower is being protected by the Radcliffe Historical Society in the Borough of Radcliffe, which is located about nine miles north of Manchester.

Dr. A. Wayne Ratcliff, M.D. (50 N. Liberty Street #1, Delaware, OH 43015) has extended the Ratcliff line backwards to the earliest known ancestor, Ivo de Tailbois. He spent eleven years, made two trips to England, and hired a professional genealogiest to secure this information. Most of this information is taken from The Book of the Ratcliffs, while generations 17-21 were taken from wills located at the courthouse in Preston, Lancashire. 1. Ivo de Tailbois/Taillebois (born in Anjou or Normandy, France in 1020 or 1040). Married Lucia Malet, daughter of Earl Aelfger and granddaughter of Gruffydd, King of Wales. Known as "Baron of Kendal," brother of the Earl of Anjou. Went to England in 1066. Children included Lucia and Nicholas Fitz-Gilbert.

2. Aelftred de Tailbois (born 1045), known as "The Englishman."

3. Gilbert de Frunesco de Tailbois (born 1070). Married Goditha.

4. Nicholas Fitz-Gilbert de Tailbois (born 1097 or 1100). [Note that some records have Nicholas as being Ivo's son.] A knight who was given the Manor of Radeclive from his lord, and may have built Radcliffe Tower, in the village of Radcliffe in Lancashire, England. Nicholas took the name "de Radcliffe" meaning of or from Radcliffe. Eventually the last name Tailbois was dropped and Radcliffe took its place in the family lineage. Married a Saxon of the Booths. Children included Mathew, Henry, and Simon.ORIGINS: Most Norman surnames derived from their place of origin. However, this was not true of Nicholas de Tailbois, whose lineage can trace both name and descent from the Norman Conquest. The name of Talbot was borne by many of Duke William's followers who were not necessarily connected by blood. As a younger son of the Baron of Kendal, Nicholas de Tailbois wanted to shed his record of foreign origin by assuming the style and title of an Englishman.
