(The following is from the book, "Genealogy of the Waldo family- a record of the descendants of Cornelius Waldo of Ipswich, Mass., from 1647 to 1900," by Waldo Lincoln A.B.):
The founder of the American branch of the family.
Of his parentage nothing has been learned, and the only clue we have to it is contained in a letter from his brother-in-law, John Cogswell, written from London to his parents in 1653, which contains the following important sentences:-" I have been with my brother Waldo's friends; his mother lives in Berwick; his Uncle John is dead; his brother Thomas is in Ireland, & his Uncle Barrow is dead; the rest are in health. I pray be earnest with my sister Waldo to be loving & tender to my three babes, for she knows not how soon hers may be left to the wide world."
From this it is probable that Waldo's family were living in or near London. It has generally been supposed that the Berwick, where Mrs. Waldo was then living, was Berwick-on-Tweed; but as there are two or three parishes called Berwick within twenty-five miles of Westbury Leigh, co. Wilts, from which place the Cogswells came and which were probably known to them, it is not at all unlikely that one of these parishes is meant, and that the family of Cornelius Waldo lived near the Cogswells in England, and were old acquaintances and friends.
The familiarity with which John Cogswell mentions the relatives of Cornelius, and the fact that the first appearance of the latter in America is at Ipswich, where he became the "farmer" of John Cogswell, Sr., whose daughter he afterwards married, is circumstantial evidence of an earlier acquaintance.
It is not known in what year Cornelius Waldo came to New England. The first recorded reference to him that has been found is the following, in Essex County Court Records, vol. ii., p. 213:-"At a Court held in Salem ye 6th of 5th mo. 1647...."
It is probable that Cornelius settled at Ipswich soon after his arrival in New England, if he did not go there immediately. " Cogswells in America," p. 15, says that his name " first appears in the town records in this entry: ' Cornelius Waldo, John Cogswell's farmer,'" but the writer has not found this entry in the town records, but has found him so styled in a list, without date or authority, in " Ipswich Antiquarian Papers," No. xxxviii., and perhaps Mr. Jameson also found it there.
He certainly could not have been a very prominent man at Ipswich and held no town offices. His name appears but twice in the town records.
The date of Cornelius Waldo's marriage to Hannah Cogswell is unknown, but it must have occurred before Jan. 2, 1651 (" 2d day, 11th mo."), for on that date John Coggeswell Senior (his father-in-law gave him a house on 49 acres of land (possibly as a wedding gift).
It is probable that the Waldos lived, while they remained at Ipswich, in the house given them by John Cogswell, although Mr. Waldo purchased a house of "Richard Betts, of Ipswich, and Joanna his wife of Ipswich, in County of Essex, for and yn consideration of thirty
pounds, this 14th of Sept., 1652."3 But this house, which is still standing on High street [as of 1900], and known, according to " Ipswich Anti-quarian Papers" for March, 1880, as " The Old Waldo House," was sold by Waldo and his wife, Aug. 31, 1654, to John Caldwell, for £26, and it is doubtful if Waldo ever lived in it.
Supposedly, Waldo was one of the first deacons of the Wenham Church. Allen says that " among these pious emigrants was Dea. Cornelius Waldo, a man of distinguished usefulness, whose house was in the garden of the writer, near to the well, which was discovered and opened, on plowing the ground in seventeen hundred and ninety two, or three." This was near the centre of the town.

Mr. Waldo gave a part of his land at "Nacooke" to his sons, John, Cornelius, and Daniel, and, in 1699, sold the rest of it to Edward Emerson, his son-in-law. He appears to have disposed of all his property before his death, as no will nor administration of his estate is on record in Middlesex, Essex or Suffolk counties.
The births of his three oldest children and of his youngest child are not recorded. Elizabeth is generally conceded to have been the first child, the date of her marriage, 1672, being evidence to this; and it is assumed that Mr. Waldo named his three oldest sons, in the deed to Edward Emerson previously quoted, in the order of their ages, as would have been natural. The births of eight of the children are recorded in a volume in the County Clerk's office at Salem, and credited to Ipswich. Singularly enough, Mr. Waldo makes no mention of his son Jonathan in any paper that has been found recorded; but there can be no doubt, from evidence to be given later, that Jonathan was his son. He probably left home much earlier than the other boys and was in no need of parental assistance when his father provided for
the others.

A fellow passendger in the "Angel Gabriel" with John Tuttle of Dover was John Cogswell "of Chebasco." He had been a merchant in London. He lost considerable property in the wreck. After living ashore some time in a tent he embarked, a passenger, in a vessel commanded by Capt. Galleys, and took up his abode in Ipswich. He had an unusually large grant of land, 300 acres at Chebasco the next Oct., when there were only two families residing in that parish. He was a wealthy and prominent inhabitant of Ipswich. He d. Nov. 29, 1669, a. about 58. His wife, Elizabeth, d. June 2, 1676; chil.
I. William, b. 1621; dea. at Ipswich, and d. thr. Dec. 15, 1700, a. 81; m. Susanna __. As an evidence of his standing, the historian of Ipswich says that after his d. his wid. sat in the meeting with the minister's wife. His s. John was f. of Nathaniel, f. of Col. Amos, f. of Francis, who d. 1881, in his 91st year. A sis. of Francis, was mo. of Hon. John Wentworth of Chicago, Author of the Wentworth Genealogy.
